Coping With Baby Blues and Post Natal Depression

In this article I would like to give you a few suggestions to help with the Baby Blues and Post Natal Depression (PND).

Back in the days when homeopathy was formalized, depression was mostly referred to as ‘sadness’. These days we all know that depression can be much more than feeling sad.. and we also have the biochemical evidence to support our observation that all kinds of life events can be the cause of psychological symptoms that not only feel real bad, make us feel uncomfortable and are often downright scary.

I think of the Baby Blues as a natural hormonal response after the incredible event that is “giving birth”. Think how hard the body has worked over the previous nine months, growing a new being, copying DNA, putting together the colossal task of reproducing a human’s blue print. The birth itself is a trauma for mom and Bub, and then her body has to make huge adjustments, so – isn’t it understandable that there will be some fatigue and anxiety? It lasts a few days. Keep an eye on your blood sugar levels during this period. Small regular meals are an important key.

But if your feelings of sadness and being overwhelmed have continued.. or have surfaced months later, then you need to take some action and seek help.

Do you feel tired all the time?

Do you feel guilty about feeling tired?

Do you feel stressed, angry or do you cry easily?

Are you not interested in sex anymore?

Do you have any feelings.. maybe you feel numb?

PROBLEMS COMMON TO MANY NEW MOTHERS

Disappointed with the birth?

Did your birth experience go as planned? We prepare for the event by practicing and negotiating the best possible situation for the baby’s safety, but if things don’t go according to plan – maybe you have to have an epidural or forceps delivery or a C-section… then it’s natural that feelings of disappointment, anger or even resentment can build up and these can be a factor in triggering depression.

Did they tell you the truth?

Did anyone really tell you – I mean sit down and really tell you the TRUTH.. about how demanding and tiring it is to have a baby and then take care of him or her, day after day, night after night ? Very likely – NO.. and if this has been your second child, have they told you that the second child is NOT like having JUST ANOTHER BABY.. no, no, no.. a second child is a lot more work than that!!

Babies get sick!

Then there are the possible problems, colic, skin problems, colds and small infections, coughs that won’t go away..

Your support network

And support – how much support do you get? Is everyone’s attention on the new baby and no one on you?

Sleep and free

Lie down and sleep when baby does.. I know you feel like you have to ‘get on with things’.. but sleep and rest is more important than washing..

You need some time off, time for yourself.. relatives can be so helpful. When my babies were small I found a local school girl who came in at 3.15 every weekday and looked after both children in another room, or took them for a walk in the pram.. for two hours while I cooked dinner.

Routine Routine Routine.. a lifesaver!!

Find a routine that works for everyone. If you know rest times are coming, then you can handle those hours. We used to have tea at five, bath at six and go to bed at seven, and my husband and I would alternate days bathing, washing up and putting the babies to sleep and then having tea in bed the next morning. It worked a treat and we did it for years..! So every other day I knew I could bathe the kids, relax while they were put to bed and have my tea in bed.

Just do what you can handle

Do you keep up with the housework and shopping? It’s a HUGE lifestyle change to go from a regular job where you have support and boundaries – to being at home with a new bub. Just do what you can handle each day. If for some reason you can’t breastfeed, no matter.. baby will benefit from your love and grow strong and healthy in your care. So – these are all completely normal situations and needs and I often thought it was a miracle if a new MOM showed no signs of mild depression!

SERIOUS DEPRESSION SYMPTOMS

Feeling overwhelmed, tired and a bit irritable during the first few months of motherhood is quite common and to be expected. However, it can feel much more than this sometimes.

Do you have outbursts of irritability or even violent anger?

Do you want to shake the baby to make him or her stop crying?

Do you have suicidal thoughts?

Do you feel like just going out and disappearing?

These are a few of the symptoms that may indicate more severe postnatal depression

Please seek help from your doctor, local support group and relatives. Antidepressant medications can be helpful, but give natural remedies a good try. And if you have a history of schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, you MUST seek help as soon as you notice any postpartum depressive symptoms.

Homeopathy can really help and you also need daily support and company, exercise, good sleep, good food, hugs and treats and lots of smiles and laughter.

DAILY LINE EXERCISE REQUIRED

A little tip I used a lot with my depressed clients was to prescribe a good laugh at least once a day. The release of laughter, from a joke or watching a funny movie…even of you don’t feel like laughing when you put the movie on..will release floods of the much needed chemicals in the brain.

There are some fantastic remedies to reduce many of the symptoms of the baby blues and postnatal depression. Read these little snapshots of remedies and if you find one that fits some of your symptoms.

1. SEPIA

This amazing remedy has helped many thousands of women around the world. You feel a bit numb, no emotions, very tired and irritable and have no libido at all. You have this pulling feeling in your stomach, your period is heavy and painful. Take a look in the mirror. Do you have a saddle mark across your chin and nose, either a yellowish tinge or a bit darker, maybe some freckles? This is a classic Sepia symptom.

2. NIGHT WALL

Famous for treating depression, Nat Mur is basically common salt made into a powerful medicine. Do you feel tearful and like you don’t have it, but you don’t want to show it or tell anyone about it. In fact, anyone offering sympathy will really annoy you! You notice that you feel cold much of the time, with a physical weakness and lack of stamina. Other symptoms may include headaches, thirst more than usual, lips feeling dry and maybe even chapped.

3. IGNATIA

This is a remedy that works full of contradictory states. Do you feel anxious and always check that the child is okay? Do you find that your mood changes often? You sigh a lot! People will notice and maybe ask what you’re sighing about. What about coffee and tobacco… Ignatia can’t stand either smells or tastes.. so that would be a pretty strong symptom after baby. Are you worried about your weight? Are you looking at diets to lose the pounds you gained while pregnant? These are all good indications that Ignatia would be useful for you.

4. STAPHISAGRIA

We give this remedy after a C-section, to help the will to heal quickly, and if the woman has felt angry or upset during any aspect of the entire birth. Do you find you need to talk to people about your birth experience and especially if there are aspects of it that have disturbed you emotionally. A few doses of Staph will release all these feelings and let you move forward in a positive frame of mind.

5. KALI PHOS

I put all my new mothers on this remedy as a tissue salt, twice daily for at least a few months after the baby is born. It helps to gently bring your energy levels back up and can make sleep deeper and more refreshing.

6. ARS ALB

So, Ars Alb friends.. don’t be offended by these questions! Do you feel really anxious and scared about the whole business of being a mother? Are you constantly worried about baby getting sick? Does everything have to be tidy and in place? The house must be clean and all washing done; shopping and prepared meals and on the table; should baby be clean and tidy if visitors come? Do you really need to have someone close by that you can rely on if the worst happens?

It is OK!! This is your nature and there is absolutely nothing wrong with all that..

Well, your natural anxiety can give you a higher level of stress than you need right now.. and a dose of Ars Alb every now and then will really help you cope better with your own inner urges. A few other physical symptoms that Ars Alb people usually experience are.. feeling cold a lot of the time, can’t sleep easily, generally feels better in warm dry weather, loves sour food and drinks and especially coffee.

7. LACHESIS

This remedy has quite different symptoms during this time. You feel worse when you first wake up in the morning – a little sluggish and unable to think clearly. You desperately need a nap in the afternoon, but know you’ll be sick again when you wake up from your nap. You will feel better if you can have a good chat with a friend or relative, get all your worries out in the open. Talking makes you feel better!

You don’t like hot places, can’t bear to wear anything tight around the waist and tend to have physical problems like strep throat more on the left side of the body.

8. PULSATILLA

Imagine the tiny pulsatilla flower, alone in the middle of the great steppes, Russia. The wind is blowing this way and that! It sits in sandy soil and closes its petals when it gets hot and at night. SO – the pulsatilla woman loves the fresh air and finds her mood very changeable. She can be cold and cries very easily.. sometimes just cries for no particular reason. You like sympathy and support and rely on your partner for comfort. Not thirsty? it’s very pulsatilla.. you have to be reminded to drink. (If you’re breastfeeding, your body will give you stronger signals of thirst than you normally have.)

Are you also a little clumsy and uncoordinated? Swollen ankles and wrists? Don’t like fatty food? These are just a selection of the remedies I have prescribed with great success over the past 20 years for baby blues and postnatal depression.
