Dominating a Taller Opponent in Taekwondo Sparring

The question is how do you win when your opponents legs are just too long. Well, I’m actually 6′ 3″ and I can tell you firsthand what works for me and what doesn’t. Most of my Taekwondo matches have been against opponents either my size or smaller. Even at national team, the heavyweight division has several 6-foot guys who weigh about 200.

Every time I entered smaller tournaments, it was when I was paired with the 5′ 8″ or 5′ 10″ guys. I hated it. I shouldn’t actually be so quick to say I hated it. I hated it when they knew what they were doing.

First, let’s talk about what doesn’t work…

Go toe to toe with me. Hopefully that is obvious. You will never trade kick for kick with someone who has 4 to 6 inches on you. There is a zone that everyone has. I call it your red zone – red symbolizes “warning”. Everyone’s red zone is different, and its size is determined by the range of your kick.

Being that I’m 6′ 3″, I have a bigger red zone than most. It also means that if you’re shorter than me, you enter my red zone before I enter yours. In other words , while you’re trying to get close enough to get a kick in, I’m already scoring on you.

Next you might try to overwhelm me with speed. Not a bad idea, but not the best either. When I would get in the ring with someone shorter than me, I assume they will turn on quickly. The first thing I do is create some distance, then I hang out a bit. I study how fast they can really move. I notice how quickly they can close the gap between us. Once I see how fast they really are, I simply adjust my hole so I can start scoring.

The bottom line is that speed is good, but when it comes to a taller opponent, they will simply compensate with distance. Against a taller opponent, too much distance is your enemy. Your opponent has a stride that is probably 1½ times yours. When you take 2 steps forward, your opponent is already 3 steps away, so WHAM… they’ll let you have it with a roundhouse kick.

So what is the best strategy? If you want to dominate your taller opponent in Taekwondo, you need to use a method called BTC This stands for Bait, Trap, Counter. Pay attention because this is the ultimate Taekwondo scoring method against taller opponents and I hate it! Of course, only when it’s used against me.

That is how it works…

When your Taekwondo match begins against a taller opponent, you WAIT. In fact, you are waiting in a high defensive state. Be ready to whojin (slide back) and unleash a spin hook kick or back kick if your opponent is overly aggressive. Otherwise, wait a moment and we will start the BTC strategy

Slowly we get to creep closer to our opponent – and make sure not to overcommit too early. This technique is known as baiting. We basically make ourselves susceptible to an attack with the main purpose of counter-attacking before they ever have a chance to score.

The best time for you to counter is during the trap. The split second your opponent misses you is known as the trap. As a side note – this is why it’s super important to kick and bring the leg down to the floor immediately so you don’t get caught in the trap. The taller the opponent, the longer it takes them to get their leg down. This makes for an easier trap. During this trap is when you unload your counter attack.

If your forte is a back kick, then you want to bait into an open position (stomach facing the same direction) and try to draw out your opponents roundhouse kick. If your forte is a spin hook kick, bait into a closed position and try to draw your opponents quick kicks (skip front leg roundhouse kicks). If you’re really one of the shorter, faster fighters, then you can step to the side and make any kind of counter you want, right after the bait.

Okay, so what happens when your opponent finds out what you’re doing? Well, you lure even closer, at least to the point where you’re still successful in counterattacking.

Once it’s done, hide the BTC by aggressively moving around the ring. Move aggressively, then bait quickly, causing your opponent to panic and hopefully attack.
