Teen Diet Plans – Can Teens Use the Medifast Diet to Lose Weight?

Are you a teenager or do you have a teenager in your household who needs to lose weight? If you’ve used Medifast yourself, or you’ve seen the ads for it on television, you might be thinking, “Can teenagers use the Medifast diet to lose weight?”

I expect you will be pleased to learn that teenagers can also use Medifast. However, you will want to look over the program for teenagers because it is not the same as the diet plan for adults.

The adult diet program is called the 5 and 1 plan. On this plan, you eat five Medifast meals each day, plus an extra meal they’ve called the lean and green meal. This is the only meal you eat non-Medifast food, and your portions are limited to lean protein and fresh vegetables.

However, the teenage plans have much more regular food on them and they cut down on the number of Medifast products eaten throughout the day. The teenage weight loss plan includes three Medifast meals a day instead of five.

Because teenagers have different nutritional needs than adults due to their growing and changing bodies, the Medifast Diet for Teens includes whole grains, fruit and dairy products. These are things you won’t see on the adult schedule, but they’re essential for teens.

Of course, the teenage plan also includes lean protein, such as lean meat and meat-free proteins (such as beans and tofu), and plenty of fresh vegetables. The fruit and vegetable part of the diet follows standard guidelines, five portions a day. There are also a few differences between the plans for teenage boys and teenage girls, with the boys’ plan adding some extra amounts of whole grains and fats.

A big aspect of the plan for teens is using the Medifast plan to make a lifestyle change, so there are plenty of tips for eating a healthy diet and how to incorporate better meals into a teen’s day. In addition, exercise and being active outdoors are also important, so there are suggestions for adding more activity to each day. An hour a day of exercise or some form of sporting activity is the usual recommendation, but for sedentary teenagers it may be a good idea to start by simply adding 30 minutes of exercise three to four times a week and adding more time each week.
