Birth Control in Light of Islam and Science

Contraception, also known as contraception and fertility control, are methods or devices used to prevent pregnancy. In the last 50 to 60 years, the discussion of birth control or population control has increased so much that it has become a talking point on television, radio, the internet and all other various platforms.

Ahmad and Abu Dawood reported on the authority of Ma’qil Ibn Yasar (May Allah be pleased with him) who narrated that a man came to the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) and said:

“I have found a woman of rank and beauty, but she bears no children. Shall I marry her?” He said, “No.” He came again to him, but he forbade him. He came to him the third time, and he (the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Marry women who are loving and very productive, for I will surpass the peoples by you.”

This hadith indirectly calls for abstaining from contraception and similar practices.

Consequences of contraceptive methods on the mother’s health

It is scientifically established that the use of contraceptive methods has serious consequences for the health of the mother. The female reproductive system controls a group of reproductive hormones secreted from the pituitary gland and the frontal lobe of the ovary. In normal conditions, these hormones are produced in measured degrees. Any increase or decrease in this can lead to illness. Therefore, doctors admit that all contraceptives affect their users negatively. This is the result of many studies conducted in this regard. Some of the serious consequences of using contraceptives are as follows:

1. Imbalance of body hormones

2. Gain weight and fluid retention in the body.

3. Severe inflammation of the female reproductive system.

4. Increased vulnerability to fatal heart attacks for those over thirty, more so for those over forty.

Death of a woman who took birth control pills

News agencies once reported the case of a British woman who died as a result of using birth control pills. She had used the tablets known as Valdan for eight years before switching to another known as Mythoclore on medical advice. After a few weeks of the change, she became ill and became bedridden. Later her health deteriorated and she died.

Recently, it has been established that the use of contraceptives, especially tablets, can lead to some cases of cancer.

The most balanced advice

The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) had wanted to forbid breastfeeding a child if the mother became pregnant, if he had not known that the Romans did it. This is because such breastfeeding can harm the nurse and stunt the growth of the infant.

If we think deeply about this prophetic guidance, we would realize that the gap between one pregnancy and another takes three years, especially if we go back to Allah’s statement:

“The mothers shall nurse their children for two whole years, (that is) for those (parents) who wish to complete the period of lactation.” (Soorah Al-Baqarah 2:233)

We will then discover that giving a mother the opportunity to fully recover her health (after the birth of a child) is a matter mandated by religion, as opposed to absolute prevention of pregnancy through contraceptive methods.

The state of affairs in Muslim and Arab countries

It is strange that most Muslim countries have been carried away by the so-called birth control campaign under the guise of economic and social challenges. Huge sums of money that could be used for more useful economic and social projects are earmarked for this campaign. Here it is very important to note that the real problem is not the scarcity of resources but the unequal distribution of resources among the people. Now a days the wealth and resources are circulating and concentrated among the rich therefore the masses of the population are not able to get their due.

Classified reports in one of the Arab countries confirm that what is spent on contraceptive campaign in a single year in terms of purchased vehicles, recruitment of doctors and nurses, purchased medicines and other materials, performed surgeries and used hospitals was enough to take care of more than a million children at a time when the birth rate in that country did not exceed half a million births.

In addition to this, there are some Muslim countries that have projects and work opportunities where there is not enough manpower, forcing these countries to import workers from Asian and European countries to help them carry out their projects.

On the other hand, there are other Muslim countries which are overpopulated but lack enough capital to establish projects where their teeming population can find gainful employment. Cannot these countries benefit from the former so that the brotherhood of mankind may be promoted? In fact, human resources are the basis of progress and development if they are used properly instead of lamenting that there are not enough potentials.

Failure rate of contraceptives

The Prophet’s saying in the Hadith, “If Allah willed to bring something into existence, nothing can prevent Him”, is also a perfect miracle that could only be understood by those who have studied contraceptive methods and their success rates. Despite all these different methods, pregnancies still sometimes occur if Allah (SWT) desires and decrees it.

A gynecologist said: “A female patient came to me and informed me that she underwent tubal ligation in London and yet found herself pregnant a few months later.”

The failure rate of these contraceptives is 55 percent if they are barrier and intrauterine methods, and the rate drops to only 1 percent if they are performed through surgical operations and by an experienced surgeon. But many researchers still record an error rate of up to 37 percent in operations performed by even experienced surgeons. There are even cases of pregnancy after removal of the uterus. Therefore, the Noble Prophetic Hadith is a perfect miracle to establish this scientific fact. And Allah (SWT) knows best.
