Simple 3-2-1 Diet That Works (Strips Away the Extra Pounds)

As a purveyor of diets for over half a lifetime now, I’ve tried a few. This one works simply because it’s simple. I’ve tried a ton of diet regimes and they all tend to fizzle out at one point or another, mainly due to a breakdown in the will to continue the early good work. With this one, that principle applies the same, but at least this regimen is simple.

THREE: Meals per day. Breakfast, lunch and tea must all be observed and normal ‘one plate’ meals are consumed i.e. no ‘seconds.’ The goal is simply to eat to fill the stomach, but not to overfill it. Clock quantity; go for typical average amounts and some fats can be enjoyed. Make sure you get at least two servings of grains and five servings of vegetables in these three meals.

THAW: Pieces of fruit per day. I usually go for these between meals so we have something to look forward to that can take the edge off our hunger. Snacking itself on this diet is out. Snacking is probably the worst, most dangerous concept for the person looking to lose weight. Make a decision to give up eating forever. This is the most important weight loss step. Food is fuel and should not be consumed to fulfill comfort needs.

ONE: Treatment per week. It is a given that it is impossible to expect people to go without birthday cake, ice cream or some chocolate. One serving a week won’t hurt us, but the trick is to be self-disciplined enough to hold out for that ONE treat and enjoy it using the power of delayed gratification.

M. Scott Peck’s wonderful book Wisdom from the Road Less Traveled talks about the principle of delayed gratification as “a process of planning life’s pain and pleasure in such a way as to increase the pleasure of first facing and experiencing the pain and getting it over with. That is the only decent way to live.”[1]

Don’t get too scientific about this process. Our consistent application over weeks, months and indeed years is far more important. The extra weight we may be carrying now will only leave our bodies for good if we get the right habits to maintain the weight loss.

Do not make or create more flexibility in your diet beyond these rules or of course advice you may have received from your doctor. Self-discipline is key. Add one day to another, then another; before you know it, you’ll have new habits and weight loss will be the inevitable result.
