Weight Loss And BMI – What Is the Body Mass Index?

BMI (Body Mass Index) has become a very useful tool in the last 2 decades that helps to accurately measure the percentage of body fat. Not only is it easy to calculate, but it also helps people manage their weight in a more scientific way.

BMI is an accurate and objective tool that will provide the relevant information we need to manage our weight.

The BMI takes into account both the weight and height of a person. An easy method to calculate your BMI is simply to divide your weight in kilograms by the square of your height.

For example, if a person is 5 ft 7 in tall (67 inches)

and weigh 120 pounds, their BMI will be calculated as follows:-

Height: 67 inches / 2.54 cm/inch = 170.18 cm, which if we convert to meters is 1.7018 meters.

Squared height: 1.7018 x 1.7018 = 2.896 m2

Weight: 120 lbs / 0.454 kg/lb = 54.48 kg

Therefore, BMI is 54.48 KG/ 2.896 M2 = 18.81.

Once you have calculated your BMI, you can compare it to the chart below to see if you are overweight, normal or underweight.

If BMI is below 18.5 = Underweight

Between 18.5 and 24.99 = Normal

Between 25 and 29.99 = Overweight

Between 30 and 34.99 = obese (class I)

Between 35 and 39.99 = obese (class II)

Any person whose BMI falls in the higher ranges is at greater risk of developing various health problems such as coronary heart disease, hypertension and diabetes. One should consult an experienced doctor for further information and details about these diseases.

BMI has some limitations. It does not take into account the differences in gender. On average, women tend to have a higher percentage of body fat compared to men. It also does not take into account different body types, age, muscle-to-fat ratio and athletic fitness, which differ from individual to individual. As a result, it may underestimate the BMI of older individuals who generally have lower muscle mass, or overestimate the BMI of individuals who have a more athletic body.

While calculating BMI, another useful factor that can be considered is a person’s waist circumference. This is especially useful to know for both men and women, as body fat tends to accumulate around the waist. For an average man measuring around 5 feet 9 inches in height, a waist circumference of over 37 inches is significant, while if it exceeds 40 inches, they can be at risk of several health problems. Among women who average around 5 ft 7 in height, a waist circumference of 31 is considered high, while a waist of more than 35 inches indicates a health risk.

Although the above just represent average numbers, people with significant waists know that they are at a greater risk of developing health problems by seeing the excess fat stored.

While there is no single measurement that provides all the information we need to know about our weight, body fat and how we manage it, BMI and waist circumference attempt to provide us with a useful and objective measure when considering a specific weight loss program .
