Healthy Halloween Trick or Treat Tips

What do you prefer, a trick or a treat? Most people prefer the treat. The excitement of Halloween looms, and with it comes the excitement of collecting buckets of candy. There will be candy everywhere in the weeks leading up to and after Halloween. It will be in your home, in your office, in your child’s school, and it will seem as if it cannot be avoided. With its presence comes a tug-of-war, and few people have the stamina to resist its temptation.

Our children are at high risk of falling victim to the candy fix. Children usually do not understand the connection between lifestyle behavior and health. Therefore, they do not understand why they should not eat all the sweets they can at once; they see and must have. It has been estimated in recent years that Americans spend approximately $2 billion on Halloween candy, and an average jack-o-lantern bucket contains 250 pieces of candy, equivalent to approximately 9,000 calories. At a time when obesity among adults and children continues to rise, these statistics are alarming.

An interesting fact is that candy was not a part of early Halloween celebrations. It wasn’t until the 1950s and 1960s that candy companies saw the opportunity to capitalize on sales by advertising candy in conjunction with Halloween. Since this has been the existing norm for several decades, we should actively find alternative ways to minimize the negative effects that sweets can have on ourselves and our children. The following explores some suggestions for staying healthy through the Halloween season.

Plan ahead: If you or your child are invited to Halloween parties, it may be best to eat a nutritious meal or snack before they arrive. A nutritious meal should consist of protein and fiber so that your stomach feels full longer. This will keep your hunger at bay and help minimize the temptation to indulge in unhealthy food choices such as high-fat, high-sugar sweets and baked goods. Stocking up before trick-or-treating can also minimize the amount of candy your child wants to consume after.

Include some tricks instead of treats: Instead of giving out candy, why not stock up on some cool toys at the dollar store to give out on Halloween night. Other ideas include handing out coins, crayons, pencils, erasers, stickers and tattoos. Doing actual tricks for your trick-or-treaters can also be a good idea.

Non-Sugar Treats: Instead of buying 5 pound bags of candy, replace candy with non-sugar treats. Pretzels, popcorn, granola bars, dried fruit, real fruit leather and animal crackers are good options.

Exercise: Trick-or-treating can be a good opportunity to get physical activity in for both you and your children. Walking instead of driving is a good idea. If you or your children plan to attend parties, make sure to get your exercise in earlier in the day or the next day to offset the calories consumed.

Keep Only Favorites: Sorting candy is a good way to reduce the amount you have. Help your children sort by choosing only their favorites and either discarding or giving away the rest. If you end up buying candy to give out, buy your least favorite candy; In this way, you will be less tempted to eat it if it is lying around the house.

Eat sweets in moderation: Allow yourself and your children only one to three pieces of candy a day and put the rest away. Moderation is a good way to keep your nutritional balance in check.

Be mindful of your consumption: Pay attention and maintain awareness when reaching for a piece of candy. Ask yourself why you want it, if you are hungry or not, or if psychological factors can motivate you. You can also guide your children through this process by asking them the same questions. Increasing awareness can help reduce your intake.

Just because you see candy everywhere doesn’t mean you have to fall into its trap. Following some of these suggestions and consuming sweets in moderation will help you and your kids through this ubiquitous holiday. Hopefully these suggestions will help you maintain a healthy balance as well as positive nutritional choices.
