Thinking of walking to lose weight? It can be done if you do it the “right” way! In fact, walking is an excellent way to burn quite a few calories while incorporating a low-impact activity into your exercise plan.

What I like to do when I go is to remember that there are a few things to consider, especially when I go to lose weight…

First of all, I try to get out and walk at least 4 or 5 times a week. I find that less than this I don’t see the results I want, but you also need your rest. So I recommend that you take a few days off a week if you go for long walks.

If you’ve ever tried walking to lose weight, you’ll understand when I first say that getting motivated to get out there and pump those leg muscles is a challenge. Those of us who battle any type of weight problem know that exercise takes discipline and at first it stinks!!

However, it is very important that you stick to a solid walking ROUTINE.

Another important aspect of walking to lose weight is the intensity of your walks. There will be a difference between a leisurely stroll along a flat path versus one with drops and bigger hills. Not rocket science.

Increased intensity = more calories burned!

I am actually located where I have no choice but to go outside where there are many hills. The great thing is that hills offer a lot of muscle work, even in both directions. Did you know that walking downhill can also help lower your blood sugar levels? And uphill helps reduce cholesterol. So you not only work your muscles, but you also reap other health benefits.

If you don’t have a walk around with hills, try going up and down your stairs a few times before and after your walk. This will help build your endurance and strength in your leg muscles, which in turn leads to a better metabolism. Remember that you are building muscle when you walk. Muscles feed on calories and ultimately lead to weight loss.

Walking to lose weight is 100% possible and I promise if you stick to a consistent schedule it will work for you.
