Found in no less than 36 African countries, with a total population estimated at around 400,000 -660,000 individuals, the elephant is the largest animal that lives on land. That is more than twice as tall as many adult people. They smell, drink, eat and wash with their long trunks. The trunk is nothing more than an extension of their nose and upper lip. Males beyond the mature age only join the herd during mating. A herd is a group that may have ten or more elephants. When elephants travel, they walk very quietly in single file, the young elephants are led by the older elephants by the tail, and the entire herd will protect the young if there is any sign of danger.

Uganda is the perfect place to experience the true diversity of wildlife and flora found in a tropical rainforest. The country contains a number of national parks with the largest population of forest elephants, but they are rarely seen. Bwindi Impenetrable, Kibale, Kidepo Valley, Lake Mburo, Mgahinga Gorilla Np, Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth National Parks and all other parks are home to the African elephants and are rich in wildlife and especially known for primates of various species, including Mighty Mountain Gorillas, red-tailed and blue monkeys, mammals including bushbucks, red and blue duikers, giraffes, climbing lions in the Ishasha sector, Uganda kob, scaly flying squirrels, woodpeckers, buffaloes, waterbucks and probably the highest concentration of hippos as well as a large number of birds including the rare Albertine endemic species.

Poaching has ravaged elephant numbers in Uganda’s Queen Elizabeth National Park, which borders Bunyaruguru, by 90 percent over the past 30 years. It is estimated that only 400 remain, and a third of them are under the age of five and many of them orphans. Across the continent, many crews have lost their matriarchs and have had to settle for a succession of inexperienced “teenage mothers” who have raised a generation of juvenile delinquents.
