Grandma Shops For Toys For Christmas 2009

Toys have always been my love. When I was a little girl, I was thrilled by the mystery and surprise of receiving a new toy. Later, with my own children, I was able to visit the world of toys again. I even considered owning a toy store.

Christmas is almost upon us again and many of us are scouring the shops, scratching our heads or searching online for toys to buy. I now have five wonderful grandchildren. They age from five months to six years. I am excited to look for toys for them. For the past few years I have done this search almost exclusively online. I think there is an abundance of information about the toys available and the prices are excellent.

For the babies on my list, I’m considering:

Hasbro Playskool Busy Ball Popper – This toy was in my grandson’s daycare and all the very young children loved it. They loved putting the balls in the spiral track and never seemed to get tired of the balls popping out of the top. I’m not sure if either of them figured out why the balls popped out, but it made for lots of giggles and amusement.

LeapFrog Learn & Groove Music Table – One of the nice things about this music table is that baby can play with it if it is flat on the floor. When they then start to pull themselves up, baby can hold on to it and press the various activity buttons for sound and music. I like this toy because it is suitable for children from 6 months to 3 years.

Fisher-Price Rainforest Jumperoo – Nothing baby likes better than jumping. Once a baby is able to hold their head up well, this is a great toy to test those legs without putting weight on them. There are toys all around. Some of them will make noises when the child jumps. Others are good at grabbing or batting. The seat rotates 360 degrees. It is very portable and can be easily stored.

Fisher-Price Amazing Animals Sing and Go Choo-Choo – It’s a lovely train. It is suitable for crawling babies. One of the wonderful things about it is that there are no tracks from which the train falls off. The colors of the train and the animals are beautiful. By placing one of the animals in the motor, baby will get a song. The train lights up, plays music and makes sounds.

For the toddlers on my list, I look at:

Fisher-Price Go Baby Go! Bounce & Spin Zebra – This comes either as a zebra or a pony. It’s great for toddlers who can climb on it and rock away. It’s low to the ground, so spills won’t hurt the baby. As well as rocking the baby can spin on it. It helps with balance and the beginning of coordination. It’s a fun toy.

LeapFrog Fridge Farm Magnetic Animal Set – This magnetic toy can be placed on any metal surface like the refrigerator at the best height for baby. The animals are large enough not to be a choking hazard. At first, baby will enjoy pressing the buttons to activate the sounds. As baby grows and matures a bit, they will begin to match the animal’s body parts and equate the animal with the sounds. Even if they don’t match them, they get a stupid name for the animal. It’s portable so kids can play with it on the floor so it doesn’t get in the way of dinner prep.

Melissa and Doug Deluxe Standing Easel – I think an easel is a necessary part of every child’s life. Once a child can stand and hold a crayon, an easel will provide them with hours of entertainment and creativity. This special easel is sturdy and allows for paint, chalk, colored pencils and dry erase.

Fisher-Price Musical Tea Set – This is a lovely set of play dishes in beautiful pastel colours. What child doesn’t want to imitate the adults in their lives and serve them food? Built from robust plastic, it will withstand those occasions when the tea just falls from small hands. The teapot is darling and plays “I’m a little teapot.”

Tonka Toughest Mighty Truck – Kids need trucks in their lives, and no one does them better than Tonka. I’m sure we had the same truck when our kids were little. It is robust and withstands a lot of abuse. We have always restricted these larger Tonka toys to outdoors, but they can be used indoors with supervision.

For the four to five year olds on my list, I consider:

LeapFrog Text and Learn – At this age, children want to do everything the adults in their lives do. With everyone running around with Blackberries and I-phones, this gives this age group their own handheld device. It also allows them to start exploring words and start spelling.

LEGO Duplo 5380 building set – Like Tonka, Lego has survived and improved over the decades. It remains a favorite among boys and girls. One of the advantages of buying Lego is that you can add it to a birthday or next Christmas.

Fisher-Price Kid-Tough Digital Camera – Again like mom and dad, kids love to take their own photos. They don’t care about the composition, they just snap away. They are excited to have their photos uploaded to the computer with everyone else’s photos. These cameras are almost indestructible and reasonably waterproof. A kindergarten teacher uses them in her classroom and the kids love it.

Baby Alive is learning to potty – This doll has the most huge engaging blue eyes. She eats, she pees and poops. She also talks and has lines like “oh oh I did a stinky” that made kids laugh. It is possible to introduce her earlier than four years, when children are trained themselves. At the earlier age, the child playing with her needs supervision. She is lovely.

Barbie and the Three Musketeers – After 50 years, Barbie is still a highly sought after item. The Barbie and the Three Musketeers line of dolls and accessories is this year’s release. The concept is built around the theory that girls can do anything they want – even become musketeers! In addition to the dolls, there is a magical castle and carriage. What adventure would be complete without them?

For our six to eight year olds, my list includes;

Transformers – These action figures, which are also three-dimensional puzzles, delight the boys who own them. Even little boys who don’t know about comics or movies entertain themselves with their own adventures. The best sellers are Optimus Prime, Ultimate Bumblebee, Devastator and Megatron.

Bakugan 7 in 1 Maxus Dragonoid – While adults scratch their heads in wonder, little boys engage with these marble-like balls. This is an extension of the Japanese game Bakugan, where fighters are pitted against each other. I think the fascinating thing about these magnetic marble-like warriors is that little boys who have no knowledge of the strategy game can invent their own way to play with them. I like this game as it will last as the players get older and more interested in learning the game.

Mindflex game – Without a doubt, this is the #1 selling game this year. Since its introduction earlier this year, it has fascinated gamers looking for something other than mind games. This out of the future game has players who wear sensors and know their abilities to concentrate on controlling the speed of fans in the console. Many customers who have already purchased it report an increased ability to concentrate on their young. It is recommended for ages 8 and up.

Nintendo DS Lite – This video game system is great for quiet times and for travel. There seem to be endless games that can be played on it. It has the ability to connect wirelessly, allowing players to pit their skills against others around the world. One of the very popular applications for this handheld device is Mario Kart DS.

LeapFrog Tag Reading System – I see my grandchildren in this age group really interested in learning to read themselves. This is another great product from LeapFrog to help them do this. This system has won many awards for the over 17 learning activities it has.

These are some of my selections that I think fit the criteria of durable, durable and fun.
