It would be difficult to tell the difference between real wood ceiling beams and high-quality polyurethane look-alikes. If you want the look of real wood beams without the hard work of installing and finishing them, faux wood beams are the ticket. You can get them in many styles and finished colors to suit your taste, from rough and rustic to smooth and shapely.

Faux beams are a fraction of the weight of wood, so one person can easily lift the largest beam and two people can safely maneuver them during installation. You cut them to size with regular woodworking saws, and they attach to the ceiling with adhesive and a few screws.

What you need

• Beams and matching wood putty, available online for shipping to your door (Google “imitation wood beams”)
• Short pieces of 2×4 to use as mounting blocks
• 3-inch screws or anchors to attach 2×4 blocks to the ceiling
• 2-inch screws for attaching beam to blocks
• Construction adhesives such as Liquid Nails Poly or PL Premium Poly

Overview

The ceiling joist has a U-section, open along the top where it rests against the ceiling. To install the beam, first cut short blocks of wood that fit inside the U and screw these to the ceiling. Then apply glue to the upper edges of the beam, place it over the blocks and screw the beam onto them.

Step by step

Once you have planned where the wooden beams will go, just follow these simple steps to install each beam:

1. Measure the inside width of the ceiling joist and cut 2×4 blocks to fit. You will need about one block for every 4 feet of joist.
2. Mark where the beam will go on the ceiling using a few chalk lines or strips of masking tape.
3. Attach the 2×4 blocks with screws or anchors every 3-6 feet along the lines you marked. Then you can dust off the chalk line or remove the painter’s tape.
4. Mark the beam for cutting. If the wall and the ceiling do not form a right angle, the angle is transferred using a sliding T chamfer. If the joist extends from wall to wall, mark it about 1/8 inch longer to get a good fit.
5. Cut the imitation wooden beam to length. Use an electric miter saw, manual miter box, or any sharp, fine-toothed wood saw for an even cut. Dry fit the cut beam to ensure the length is correct.
6. Apply construction adhesive along the open top edges of the beam.
7. With a helper, slide the beam over the blocks, holding it close to the ceiling, and screw it to each block on each side. Countersink the screws slightly.
8. Fill the screw holes with matching wood putty.
9. Climb down the ladder, sit back in a comfortable chair and admire the new dimension you just added to your room.

Tips for good results

• If possible, place each 2×4 block on a ceiling joist. Then you can use regular screws to attach them securely and not have to bother with plastic or metal anchors.
• Cut the ceiling beam slightly long so that the ends fit snugly against the walls.
• Apply the glue to the inside of the wooden beam so that it does not pinch the outside of the beam. If any adhesive is squeezed out, gently wipe it away. Or, to avoid smudging, let the adhesive harden first and then cut it away with a razor or utility knife.

Multiple dimensions

You can do much more than attach artificial wooden beams to the surface of the ceiling. You can wrap the open side and ends of the beam for a completely solid look from all angles. You can suspend beams from point to point to simulate ties or rafters. You can use them vertically to simulate support posts. And you can also use artificial wooden beams and accessories outdoors, for everything from decorative cutting boards and consoles to freestanding pergolas.
