Building Model Trains and Scenery

If you’re getting tired of pulling to work out for the holidays and putting it up around the Christmas tree and then putting it away every year, maybe it’s time to think about putting it up permanently. Part of the fun of having a model train and railroad is being able to build the scenery around it.

The first thing to think about when starting your railway is bechwork. This is indeed the foundation of a successful railway. There are a number of different ways to properly wet the tableware. You can either buy a ready-made kit or build one yourself. Buying a set certainly has its advantages. They are pre-cut and have all holes pre-drilled. Plus they are generally much stronger and sturdier than one you can build yourself. You also have the option of taking down the benchwork and moving it from place to place much more easily, should the occasion arise.

Obviously, building your own benchwork is much more complicated and time consuming. But there are also many advantages to building your own benchwork. You have complete freedom to visualize and design your perfect benchwork to suit your space and location. You will need to think about how big or small you want it and consider the space available. Of course, you have the option to add to the design later as you see fit. What type of shape do you want? It can be customized according to your wishes and imagination. Typically the legs stand 28 inches, but again, this can be changed to suit your specific desires. The most important thing about your design is that it is able to withstand the weight required. Generally, a good piece of 3/8 or half inch thick plywood is sufficient. Remember, if you want your design to be portable, it’s wise to cut your plywood into sections for easy transport of your table.

There are many ways to help increase the layout of the scenery on the railway. One of the goals of the landscape should be to make it appear as realistic as possible. There are many ways to do this, including placing larger trees in the foreground and smaller ones on top of mountains or in the background. It is also wise to theme the railway to resemble the train you are driving. If you run a logging train on your line, it should run through a rugged mountainous area filled with a multitude of trees. You can also place a sawmill or lumberyard nearby.

There are other aspects that you can include in your railway scenery including houses, villages and buildings. You can also incorporate bridges, tunnels, roads, grassy meadows, fields and rock formations. There are lots of fine details that you can and should add to the landscape, including flowers, bushes, ponds, rivers, waterfalls, and any type of person or animal or livestock. The possibilities are virtually endless.

One of the best reasons to get into the model train hobby is to show off our artistic talent, so plan and work hard to make sure you wow your family and friends.
