Ouch! Roller Blading Safety Tips For Roller Blading Fun

OUCH!!

As I write this my left wrist is a little sore and I can feel the scrape on my knee rubbing against my pants. I made the stupid mistake of leaving some of my roller skating gear at home.

And now I pay the piper!

Roller skating is a great way to get fit and stay fit as a family. Kids love it. And for adults, it’s a wonderful way to get a workout without too much wear and tear on your joints. Moms, worried about your tush? Roller skating will strengthen your butt and lower back like the most tyrannical trainer.

But it can also be a bit treacherous. Unlike ice skating, where you’re bundled up in soft winter gear, roller skating usually has you out in shorts or light pants and t-shirts. Add to that some varied terrain and the speed you can hit on a hill… and you better think about safety!

Injury prevention is key to making exercise fun. Damages are does not fun! So here are my rollerblade safety tips so you and your kids can slide and have fun while minimizing cuts and bruises.

Safety tip #1 for roller skating: Build your muscles

Your muscles are your body’s built-in safety equipment. Not only do they keep you moving, but they keep your joints and bones in place and even offer some buffering on impact.

For example, if you fall awkwardly in a way that would twist your knee and cause serious injury (like a broken bone), strong leg muscles can save you. They hold your knee joint in place with a sturdy grip and take the fall for you. Imagine wrapping your knee in a 1/2 inch thick Ace bandage. That’s what your muscles do.

Even better, the more you build your muscles, the denser your bones become. The best way to build bone mass is to do strength-building exercises. So by building your muscles, you not only create a special suit to protect your bones, you also make your bones stronger!

For roller skating, I recommend leg exercises like squats, jumps and lunges as good exercises to build your leg muscles (add a weight vest for extra weight). And don’t forget your arms, as they will take the brunt of many falls. Push ups and curls work wonders to strengthen your arms and wrists.

Roller Blading Safety Tip #2: Prepare Mentally

Mental preparation is one of your best defenses. This isn’t about being paranoid or being so overwhelmed with fear of the possibilities that you can’t move an inch. No, this is about getting yourself into a state of mind that puts you on high alert.

When you start with an awareness of potential accidents, you tell yourself to be ready. Prompted by this message, your body begins to make little calculations of how to adjust if something happens. Often without you even knowing that these calculations and adjustments are being made!

If you go a step further and practice falling a few times or go through a scenario in your mind, you’ve essentially practiced so your body knows exactly what to do when the real task occurs.

But even better, this mental preparation will help you avoid accidents. When you make the mental note about accidents, your mind turns on all its safety radars. You may not even consciously notice, but you begin to pick up sights, sounds, and sensations that help you navigate around hazards.

You are much more tuned in to the pebbles in the road, the car coming in from the left at the intersection or feeling the change in pavement texture under your wings.

Put your mind on high alert and you’ll be surprised how instincts kick in to keep you safe. And even if your kids say, “I know, Mom” ​​in that annoyed tone, help them out mentally too with a few reminders before and during your blading expedition.

Roller Blades Safety Tip #3: Protect your head with a helmet

Nothing makes more sense than protecting your key. Get a helmet that fits properly by covering your forehead enough that you can look up and see it there. Make sure the strap is tight enough but not uncomfortable so you can’t easily turn your head.

And then wear it.

Roller Skate Safety Tip #4: Protect your wrists

That’s what I neglected that fateful day. I left my wrist guards in the basement.

When we fall, our tendency is to reach out our hands to catch ourselves when we fall. But few of us have wrists strong enough to take the weight of our body combined with the momentum of a fall.

Find a nice set of wrist guards and strap them on. Rolled up, they also store nicely inside your roller blades, so you don’t have to look for them when you need them. (I’m making a note of this!)

Safety tip #5 for roller blades: Check your blades

Good equipment is the key to safety. The hilly country roads we blade on really take a toll on our blades. So we are careful to look at our knives, especially the brakes. Your brakes are basically a lump of rubber that you lower to grind against the road to slow you down. Eventually you can wear it all away.

So every ride out, I look at them to make sure I have plenty of brake material left to donate to the pavement in exchange for a safe speed. Make sure your brakes are securely engaged – no loose bolts or wiggles.

Also give your wheels a regular inspection. You may need to replace them if they look worn. And make sure to replace the ones that have cracks in them.

In the end, you just have to pay close attention when you go out to how your blades feel. Is a wheel stuck? Do you feel any wiggle while braking. Take the first few minutes to notice how well your equipment is working so you can fix something before a problem arises.

A few final safety tips for roller blades

Knee and elbow pads, although not as important as the other safety equipment mentioned, can also give you extra safety. Especially when you’re starting out.

Wear clothes that are easy to move in.

And I advise against carrying an iPod or listening to music if you’re on the go. It is important to have all your senses alert for information about approaching cars.

When a car approaches, remember that roller skating can take up a lot of space and make you a little unpredictable. So to stay on the safe side, I recommend stopping while the car is passing. This is what I teach my children.

Put these roller skating safety techniques into action and you can enjoy all the great, low-impact exercise that roller skating has to offer. Without paying a big toll if things take a turn for the worse.

Trust me, next time I’ll make sure I get my wrist guards from the basement and strap them on before I go out.
