Driving Sanely and Safely in Dubai
Trail riding safe and sound in Dubai
Driving in Dubai is a robust experience on many levels, all of which will help strengthen your levels of patience and tolerance if guided properly.
A true test of the Himalayan monk’s attained enlightenment might be to hand him a UAE driver’s license, put him in a medium-sized car, point him to Sheikh Zayed Road and tell him to be at the Deira City Center mall in 10 minutes. Although we are very curious and somewhat skeptical about the results of that test, we figured it was probably a good idea to take some of the lessons we could learn from that scenario.
With that in mind, we’ve put together some driving tips and rules of good behavior to live by that might help you stay safe and sound when you hit the streets of Dubai.
Harmonious Dubai driving tips
Be the Traffic
Driving in Dubai requires a degree of patience that can only be achieved with monk-like shrewdness. Until you reach the necessary level of cosmic consciousness, our advice is to loosen up. Don’t be a stiff driver. Be fluid like a river. Give space. Remain calm. Breath.
High beam pressure
Somewhere along the road in the UAE, it has become tradition for a driver in any lane to beam the occupants of the car in front of him with super-turbocharged headlights until the driver is overwhelmed and surrenders due to blindness. This is most common when the blinker is driving a Ferrari, Mercedes or a giant SUV, and can leave the blinded feeling frustrated and victimized, and yes, hard to see. It’s normal, don’t take it personally. Any opposition to this behavior will upset the delicate balances of tradition and open the door to chaos. If someone comes barreling down the freeway and bullies you into the next lane, be Zen, change lanes and let them go.
Lane change in Dubai takes on new and different dimensions. Many times you will find people driving in more than one lane at the same time. The four-lane weaving is common place, along with the bottleneck-front-line-squeeze and signalless-last-second-lane-change-cuttoff-and-brake. These maneuvers can be a cause of concern for the European driver. Over time, these maneuvers can also become contagious, and you can also find yourself driving idiotically, but we remind you that the true Zen master does not waver from the chosen path, and is harmonious even with donkeys on the way. Pay attention to the four corners of your cars and the cars around you. Signaling is not nearly as popular an idea as it is from where you may be coming from.
No one in the way
The Zen monk’s meditative mind and the UAE’s permitted level of intoxication have something in common; nothingness. The UAE has zero tolerance when it comes to drink driving. If you are caught behind the wheel of a car with any amount of alcohol in your system, you will be arrested, your license will be suspended, and in most cases you will be asked to leave the country after serving your time and paid your fine (and maybe even get spanked). If you plan to have fun in one of the great Dubai excursions, go crazy and travel on the road of safety… in a taxi.
While it is true that the wheels of the bus go round and round, so do many newly arrived UAE residents when they are stuck in a roundabout. Here’s a quick overview of how roundabouts work: When you approach a roundabout, the lane you’re in will dictate to other drivers which direction you’re going. If you are in the middle lane when approaching the roundabout, drive straight past the roundabout. If you are in the right lane when approaching the roundabout, take the first right after entering the roundabout. The left lane is the tricky one; if you’re in the left lane, you’ll go in the direction of the left (meaning you’ll cut right at some point to exit the roundabout). A western driver will take some time to understand this concept as he will go crazy every time he is cut off by the driver in the left lane cutting to the right. Be aware that the driver on your left can cut you off to pull out to the right at any time and he would be right to do so. Knowing the car on the left is key. If you are in the left lane and trying to exit the roundabout, signal and be aware that the car on your right may not be aware of you.
One Hundred and Second Rule
In most countries, the two second rule leaves two seconds of time between you and the car in front of you. Obeying this rule will get you nowhere in Dubai and in most cases will be harassed by the car(s) behind you. Drivers in Dubai don’t like having space between your car and the car in front of you, and they’ll let you know by squeezing into the four inches of space you’ve allotted for a quick brake of the driver in front of you. Our advice is to stick to the two second rule as it saves lives. Resist the temptation to let in the pushy driver who tries to squeeze a few inches by cutting in front of you. The enlightened driver will see the intrusion as another opportunity to practice tolerance. Let them come in and secure your cloud in the sky.
This is an alien concept in the UAE. If you expect drivers to yield to you just because they’re facing a big triangular sign that says “Yield,” you’re setting yourself up for abject failure that manifests itself in high blood pressure, breakouts, cold sweats, nightmares and occasional eyelid muscle spasms. To be Zen, always assume that the other driver will not yield to you under any circumstances. Train wolves like speed if they don’t give in and gratitude if they do.
Don’t let this get you down. Shouting doesn’t necessarily carry the weight it does in Western countries as a disrespectful gesture towards others. In the UAE, the horn can be interpreted in the same way as a turn signal can; it’s just another way to communicate with other drivers. In case you’re on the receiving end of a full-on blow-down, our advice is to shrug it off and let it go. If it makes you feel better, hoot back, but don’t get emotional about it. In the event that the driver of a large tinted SUV blasts the horn in a rub-in-your-face-and-shove-it-through-your-nostrils style nudge for the perilous haircut of split hair, try to keep your temper. The truly advanced Zen driver will enjoy the confusion created by smiling, waving and moving out of the way.
Flight, no fight
Driving in Dubai can push your buttons and invariably make you angry. Still, never ever, get into an argument in the UAE. Western and European style tantrums will serve no purpose in Dubai. Cursing and hand/finger signals and gestures attract heavy fines in the UAE and failure to control yourself can land you behind bars. You may find yourself in a very hairy situation and the law will not be tipped in your favor. If you feel the urge to birdie in Dubai, be prepared to pay a fine of AED 5000. Our advice is to resist temptation and use that money to treat yourself to one of the many world-class de-stressing spas around town.
Zen Master ZOOZi encourages effortless driving. Don’t let other people’s bad driving lower your driving standards. The only thing you can control is your own driving, so do it well. In time, the generous, forgiving and conscious driver will reap the rewards of Dubai’s lovely highways, byways and roundabouts by reaching their destinations safely.
