Building a Chicken Coop – Construction Terms

Planning to build a chicken coop but getting confused by some of the terminology? I want to share these basic terms that you may want to know and what they mean to you when building a chicken coop.

Panty

A truss on any structure is on top of the roof a frame. The rafters when you build a chicken coop will also be located at the top of your roof. The rafters can be prefabricated or built in place, and the rafters add stability and shape to your roof.

Studs

A stud is a single piece of lumber used for walls or any other single piece of framing lumber placed in a vertical position to construct your coop.

Corner posts

The corner post for building a chicken coop is 4″x 4″ posts set on a concrete footing and secured with a saddle strap.

Concrete footing

Your footing is very important for strength and to allow the fence to keep predators out. You can dig 8″ diameter and 12″ deep corner post feet for your base post straps. The alternative option is to dig a 4″ wide and 6″ deep continuous footing in the perimeter of the coop.

Concrete mix

Your concrete footing is a mixture of sand, stone and Portland cement. The mixing formula is 3 deep shovels of sand 2 heaped shovels of stone and 1 heaped shovel of type 2 Portland cement Next add water and mix to a thick consistency, making sure to make it not too dry and not too wet. The base post saddles should be set as soon as the concrete mix can support the weight of the base post saddles.

Base Post saddle straps

As mentioned with corner post installation, when building a chicken coop, secure your post to the base of the posts with a Simpson base post saddle strap. These come in different sizes depending on the size of your post. The size you will most likely use will be a 4″ saddle for the post and a 6″ inlay.

Simpson straps and plate fasteners

When building a chicken coop, fasteners become very useful. They come in different sizes and are used for several installation phases of your project. Some of the fasteners you will need are: 90 degrees. Knobs, joist hangers corner plate fasteners and flat plate fasteners to connect at the end of two studs or cladding.

Standard attachment

A standard fastener is typically galvanized screws or galvanized nails. Both screws and nails are produced in different sizes and lengths. Use the appropriate size and length of fastener to fit the lumber you are using.

Tools

The tools you will need are: framing hammer, finishing hammer, hand saw, miter saw, electric circular saw, ½” or 3/8″ drill, standard screw bit and Philip head bit, table saw, miter saw, pencil, tape measure, square, 2 foot level .

When building a chicken coop and ordering materials, these terms should help you communicate with your hardware and lumber supplier. Now that you know what all these terms mean, you’ll have an easier time creating your chicken coop, big or small.
