The Weighting of a Nylon Whip

The weight of a whip is crucial to how it performs. When many people think of weight in a whip, they think it is contained in the core of the tool. This is true to some extent, but not the complete idea of ​​weighting a whip. What I’m referring to here is not the object’s static weight, or what it weighs in pounds, ounces, or grams. I’m referring to the individual weight components of a whip, or separate parts that help give it its weight. The core of a whip provides some of its weight, but not all of it. I have divided the basic process or components into four sections: the core, the butt, the strap (the main part) of a whip, and its tip or end.

1. The Core – The core of a nylon whip is what is commonly believed to give the object its weight. This is partially true. The core of many nylons is a strand of paracord packed with steel shot or bbs. Many nylon whip makers use this, some use electrical wire, ball chain, also known as bead chain, strips of lead, rubber, steel or aluminum cable and even nylon rope. I have used all of these with good success. Different models of whips I build require different core materials. The core should not only help provide weight in the tool, but should also be flexible. One suggestion I make to others when building their own nylon whips is to use one type of core material for the particular model they are building. Whatever material is used, use only that material on that model and do not mix materials. Using more than one core material in a whip can cause potential problems in its construction. As with many physical products, fewer moving parts mean fewer potential breakdowns. A whip is much the same as it is simple in its construction but very dynamic in its action. In a bullwhip, the handle is also considered part of the core. The type of material used for the handle will make a significant difference to how much weight the core contains. Handle materials that I use are steel tubing, solid steel bar, aluminum and even composite materials. So the core provides the main weight in a nylon whip.

2. The Bottom (Heel) – Many nylon whip makers use lead strips added to the butt, or heel part, to add weight to the handle and help balance the overall weight of the whip. The amount of added lead determines the amount of added weight. The build point where the lead is added can also make a difference. Some people like to add a large amount of lead to the bottom of the handle before any braiding or reinforcement is done. Some choose to add the lead after the braided covering is complete. Some people do not use lead at all in construction. It’s a matter of preference.

3. The string band (main part) – The braided strap itself makes up a good portion of the weight inside the braided item, especially in how the whip tapers. Because the paracord strands are of a uniform width, the taper is mostly achieved by dropping strands into the core during braiding. The taper is also subjective to the whip maker. Some taper the object a little slower, while some taper it faster. A slower taper means the main string maintains its thickest diameter for a longer distance, while a faster taper is just the opposite. A slower taper will retain more weight throughout its length, whereas a faster taper means the tool retains less weight in the belt.

4. The tip – The tip of a whip is its end where the braid stops. On a bullwhip, snakewhip or stockwhip, the point culminates in the fall, or the place where the fall is tied. Some nylon whip makers end their whips in an 8-strand tip, some in a 6-strand tip, while most end with a 4-strand tip. The number of threads in which the whip ends determines the thickness of the tip itself and ultimately the weight of the tip. This is another overlooked area in whip construction when referring to the weighting of a whip. Most nylons are finished with a single strand of paracord for the fall. The point of should be as close as possible to the measurement of the single string. Through the ongoing taper of the whip, the energy moves, builds and pushes its way to the end.
