Brooke Double R – Sports Car That Looks Like A Racer
Sneaking into the group of small but incredibly fast sports cars Brooke Double R. It was opened a while ago, but it has been updated and improved by a couple of experienced engineers, and this beautiful and small car is now in production. You get incredible acceleration and cornering for your money.
The performance is sensational, and it depends on how much power you want. The most powerful Brooke Double R – 300 bhp – has a claimed 0-60 mph time of 3.2 seconds, while 260 bhp will get you to 60 mph in less than 4 seconds, and all the excitement that goes with that performance. To qualify you need a Noble M400 or a Porsche 911 Turbo.
Clearly, the Brooke Double R is a real firecracker. The fact that the top speed is only around 155 mph – the same speed as an electronically limited supercar – is not the case. It’s acceleration, braking and cornering that give you the real thrill of fast driving, and you’ll get it here.
Most of these open wheelers have a front engine, but the Brooke Double R has a mid-mounted 2.3 liter Cosworth Ford engine, which develops 190, 260 or 300 bhp according to your choice. It’s like a mini version of a mid-engined racing car, only made wider to accommodate two people.
Optimal weight distribution
To get closer to the ideal weight distribution, the engine is mounted front and rear instead of crosswise. With the engine mounted on the frame in a unit with its transaxle, you get a bit too much weight on the back. On the other hand, with the engine in front of the transaxle, you get better weight distribution and a slimmer body – just what the guys who designed the Brook Double R wanted.
To do this, they need to find a good transaxle at a realistic price. Brooke has opted for a Renault five-speed unit, as a six-speeder will cost a lot more. You might think a six-speed box is mandatory these days, but it’s not small for street use. With five well-chosen ratios, you can get the same performance as a six-speed, which often has very high gearing in the top two or three ratios.
The car has an elegant and simple body with a small wraparound windshield, and cycle-type fenders – it looks like a racing car for the sixties. The headlights are hidden, and you raise them manually. All nice and simple.
The cockpit is like a driver, too
The cockpit is also self-explanatory – absolutely no frills on site! You sit behind the wheel of a small Momo, with the lower part of the rim flattened, and the angle of the rev-counter set in the instrument binnacle off one side. The gear lever is on the opposite side of normal – like in an old racing car – the one on the right is on the right side of the drive car and vice versa.
There is a nice pedal box with pedals mounted on the floor – like in the best cars – and a simple molded seat.
You can have either a very low front page, or a slightly high one. Both are still low with no room for a wiper – it’s really a wind deflector you see. Choose the lower one, and you’ll want a helmet at speeds over 75 mph, despite the twin headrests.
Cosworth-Ford up to 300 bhp
When choosing a Cosworth- Ford engine Brooke has decided on quality and easy access to the parts needed for servicing. Cosworth supplies a range of tuned Ford engines, modified to give them the durability required for power output, and is a four-cylinder, compact in-line unit.
The base model is equipped with 190 bhp, then you can go to 260 bhp at 7,500 rpm with 200 lb ft of torque (271 lb ft) at 6,100 rpm, or you can use all the power with the 300 bhp unit.
The suspension and steering are on classic lines, with double wishbones in front and back, from the airfoil section because it has to go in the air, with aluminum alloy suspension. Coil springs and adjustable dampers are fitted at the front and rear.
Buy a Brooke Double R with 190 bhp and you’ll spend around $50,000 (£27,995) but if you want the manic 300 bhp version, you’ll likely lose your licence, paying around $70,000 (£36,995). It will help if you live where there is a lot of sun and not a lot of rain!
