Used Campers – The Pop Up
I was looking online for used campers earlier this year and started to get overwhelmed by the options. Used campers come in all sizes and many for a variety of purposes. You have teardrop, travel, pop up, 5th wheel and on and on. For my family, a used pop up camper is the best choice for a few reasons.
First, the big benefit of buying a used camper is the price. Specifically, a used pop up camper will be the most effective option and you can get the most bang for your buck. I went down to some dealers that specialized in new and used campers and was shocked by the price difference. I’m looking for a pop up with air conditioning, refrigerator, hot water heater, water pump, toilet and shower. Recently, I was looking for a minimum of $9,000 for a baseline. Having a bit of sticker shock, I spent a few afternoons on Craigslist. In 5 days I found a Coleman 1998 in pristine condition that was garage kept that had everything I wanted but over half the price I ran to the dealer.
The pop up is also light weight and can be easily towed by most vans, light trucks and SUVs. I towed a Coleman with a 2007 Chevrolet 1500 Silverado and noticed a big difference in gas mileage. I average about 17 miles per gallon with a load, 19 without a load.
In addition to the cost, size and features of the pop up camper is ideal for a family of four. The family sleeps comfortably in two folded out. I personally have two little girls and they love the space they have on the side. Personally, the only recommendation I have is to buy foam egg crates for adults sleeping in the camper. Most used campers come with standard camper beds. This can be uncomfortable during the evening, especially if you weigh more than 180 lbs.
In addition to the spacious fold out for sleeping, most pop up campers have a small dinette, three way refrigerator, storage area on the bench seat and cooking area. It is a big advantage if you can find a used camper that has a full kitchen area that has a sink with hot water, four burner cook top and lots of storage. Again, if you’re looking for used campers to save money, you’ll benefit from buying one with a cassette toilet and shower. First of all, both are useful for emergencies, if the location where you are camping does not offer facilities or if the facilities are simply bad. Second, used campers have a better resale value than campers without additional features.
The last great feature of the pop up is the ease of setup. Pop ups are easy to set up and can generally be taken from full to ready to sleep in 15-20 minutes.
Most used campers have a lot of life, so if you’re in the market, check out our pop up camper!
