You should look at gaining about 5 pounds in the first trimester, and about 1 pound per week during the second and third trimesters. It’s okay to lose more or less from week to week, but your ultimate goal should be around 25-35 pounds of total weight.

Exercise is a big part of a quick post-delivery recovery. You will be able to have easy labor and recover quickly. And if you’re in shape when you deliver, the faster your body will heal, which means the faster you can start losing weight.

If you are overweight and out of shape, you can count on hours and hours of labor, slow recovery, and you will have a really hard time to take extra weight. Once you pass the recommended weight gain, you will have a lot of fat tissue that will be difficult to burn.

In addition, if you are overweight and out of shape, the recovery time will be weeks instead of a few days. You won’t be able to start a diet for a few months.
