Lose Weight Safely – In Ballet Shoes and Pointe Shoes

I had weight problems when I was younger. At the National Ballet School of Canada, we are weighed once a week. Our weight is posted publicly in the lunch room, from week to week. On Friday when my class was weighed, I skipped breakfast but drank a lot of coffee – to stimulate urination, lose water, and lose weight. So we went to ballet class at 9:00 without nutrition, and dehydrated. Not recommended for a good lifestyle.

The funny thing is, I didn’t have a weight problem before I started school. I was like a skinny kid, so mom had all kinds of tricks and punishments to make me eat.

The most incredibly talented dancer in our school at the time also had a weight problem. He was chosen for a solo by a visiting Russian teacher. He lost a ton of weight and danced brilliantly. People were in awe when he took the stage at a school event. Time and space stand still as she dances.

But after he went to Russia, he gained weight again. Then a few months later he had to transfer to the National Ballet Company. He didn’t. We hear he ended up in the hospital with a “tropical illness”. huh? Looking back, I couldn’t believe it. I think he starved himself. Too much. Just my theory.

About a year later I met him on the street. I’m going through the “I’ll never dance again” period. He worked for a phone company and helped me get a job there. (I was there for three months).

After I severed all ties with the school, I mysteriously lost weight. My mom called me “skull”, I was so skinny.

A famous ballet story about weight is “Dancing On My Grave” by Gelsey Kirkland. It’s a thriller for bio ballet, very engrossing.

What does all this mean? First of all, it means that our teachers don’t know about being thin and healthy. There was nothing wrong with that.

But now! So how do you fit into a size zero tutu?

I remember an incredible moment after I finished my Cecchetti teacher exam. My examiner was Margaret Saul, who was very scared at the time. (and somewhere in his eighties). My exam was the last day – and after my exam partner and I left the studio, Ms. Saul came out. He smiled at me and said “You have plump arms – like Karsavina. They make the right line”. (Cecchetti’s pupil and partner to Nijinsky).

I don’t think I heard the truth for about two weeks. Karsavina? Tamara?

So, it’s just a matter of perspective.

And – to the point – fat does not make you fat. Carbohydrates make you fat. Except for Ezekial or other brands of FLOURLESS bread, forget the bread. “Empty calories” means no nutrients. People who are sensitive to wheat or sensitive to gluten tend to gain weight and bloat with fluids. It is now easy to find gluten and wheat free products.

Protein, vitamins, and minerals are found in meat, fish, eggs, dairy products, vegetables, nuts, seeds, salads and fruits. Not enough for you? For essential fatty acids, a small amount of flaxseed oil and a small amount of ultra-refined fish oil daily increases your omega 3 intake.

Unfortunately our culture is set up for the billion dollar diet industry and the processed food industry. This often leads to muscle loss, while a healthy diet will help ballet dancers build muscle mass.

You should eat fresh food. Set realistic goals. Tune out of the junk and get healthy in ballet shoes and pointe shoes – lose weight safely by eating REAL food, good fats and oils, and forget empty carbs.
