Jim Rohn’s Second Pillar of Success: Goal Setting, Part Three – SMART Goals
Hi, Jim Rohn here. As you know, we are focusing on the second Pillar of Success this month – Goal Setting.
We have introduced the four main components of Goal Setting:
1. Evaluation and Reflection.
The only way we can determine what we want in the future and how we can get there, is firstly to know where we are now and secondly, what is our level of satisfaction with where we live. As we focus this month on goal setting, the first order of business and our topic for the past two weeks is evaluation and reflection.
2. Dreams and Goals.
What are your dreams and goals? It has nothing to do with the past or what you think you can achieve, but what you want. Have you ever sat down and thought about the value of life and decided what you want? It’s not what other people tell you you should do or what culture tells you to be successful. These are dreams and goals born from your own heart and mind. This is a purpose that is unique to you and comes from who you created and gifted it to. Last week, we showed you how to figure out what you want from life.
3. SMART objectives.
SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time Sensitive.
Specifics: Don’t blur. What exactly do you want?
Measurable: The number of your goals. How do you know if you’ve got it or not?
Achievable: Be honest with yourself about what you can reasonably do at this point in your life – along with your current responsibilities.
Realistic: It should be feasible, realistic and practical.
Time: Associate a time frame with each goal. When should you complete your goals?
We’re going to spend this week looking at how to apply the SMART test to your goals to make them powerful!
Consider the word “accountable”. It means “to give an account.” When someone knows what your goals are, they help hold you accountable. Have other people participating in this program with you (have you thought about inviting a friend to join you on this one-year journey?) giving you another push to achieve your goals! Next week we’ll show you how to set up an accountability partner.
This week we will discuss point 3 – SMART goals.
SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time Sensitive.
I really like this acronym SMART, because we want to be smart when setting goals. We want to intelligently decide what our goals are so that we can accomplish them. We want to set goals that our hearts believe in, that our minds believe in and that our bodies will achieve. Let’s take a closer look at each SMART goal component:
Specifics: The goal is not a place to waffle. They are not obscure places. Ambiguous goals produce ambiguous results. Incomplete goals produce incomplete futures.
When we are specific, we use the power of our dreams and adjust our power to achieve our goals. We then know exactly what we are taking. There is no question. When we set priorities and manage our time, we do it for a specific purpose to achieve the desired results. No wonder or guessing. The future is locked in our minds and we see it – special – and powerful! Don’t underestimate how important it is to have specific and concrete goals. They act like magnets that draw you to them! Specific SMART goals.
Measurable: Always set measurable goals. I would say “specifically measurable” to take into account that our principles are also specific. Our goal should be as we know when we are progressing and to what extent. Whether it’s in hours, pounds, dollars or whatever, we need to be able to see exactly how we measure up as we continue our life journey using our goals. Can you imagine if you don’t measure up to your goals? You’ll never know which way you’re going or even if you’re going anywhere! SMART goals are measurable.
Achievable: One of the things that many people do to their detriment – and do it with good intentions – is to set goals that are too high and out of reach. Yes, it’s important to set big goals that make your heart flutter, but it’s also important to make sure they’re achievable. In the next section we talk about being realistic. So what does it mean to be achievable? Achievable goals are those that are realistic but can also be achieved in a shorter period of time than they should be. Now when I say doable, I don’t mean easy. Our goals must be set so that they cannot be reached; so that they will challenge us to grow as we move forward to achieve them. After the next paragraph, I will give examples of achievable and realistic goals. A SMART goal can be achieved.
Realistic: The root word of realistic is “real”. A goal should be something we can “realistically” or “realistically” accomplish in our lives. There are some goals that are just not realistic. You have to be able to say, even if it’s a long-shot goal, that yes, it’s realistic — you can make it. You may have to say that it takes x, y, and z to do it, but if it happens, then it can be done. This doesn’t mean it has to be a big goal, but it has to be realistic. This is to a large extent, up to the individual. For one person, a goal may be realistic, but for another it is unrealistic. I would advise you to be honest with yourself when planning and evaluating. It might be better to ask a friend to help you (as long as the friend is optimistic and not pessimistic). This can help you understand what is realistic. A SMART goal is realistic.
Attainable and Realistic Examples: Knowing that you could use some help distinguishing between attainable and realistic, here’s an example: You’re overweight and need to lose 150 pounds to get to your ideal weight. Are these goals achievable? Yes, considering you also makes it realistic. For example, it is not realistic that you can do it in 5 months. 18-24 months would be realistic (with hard work). Thus, losing 150 pounds in 2 years is possible and realistic, while losing 150 pounds in 5 months is not possible or realistic.
Time: Every goal should have a time frame attached to it. I think that living alone is more productive for us as human beings because there are moments of connectedness. Can you imagine how many delays there would be on earth if people never died? We will never be able to “get around it.” We can always postpone. One of the powerful aspects of a good goal is that it has an end, the time it takes you to complete it. You start working because you know there is an end. The longer you work because you don’t want to fall behind. As the deadline approaches, you work diligently because you want to meet the deadline. You may need to break down large targets into time frames of measurable parts. It’s okay. Set smaller goals and work on them on your own time. SMART goals have a timeline.
Make sure you spend some time reflecting this week to make sure your goals fit the parameters of SMART. Consider the following reflection questions and related action points. Doing so will create a real machine in your goal and will be charged to help you achieve your dreams.
