Common Household Repairs – Part 1

In this article (part one of a two-part series), we’ll discuss a simple way to repair loose hinges on doors and cabinets at home.

Kitchen and bathroom cabinets are notorious for hinge misalignment. After repeated use, the hinge of the cabinet often wears down, causing the door to sag and not function properly.

Typically, standard cabinet hinges, including “self-closing” hinges, may require a simple turn of screws and the problem is solved. Often the screws come loose, they wear down the embedded wood and the screw does not hold any tightening force.

An easy way to solve this problem is to inject wood glue directly into the original screw pocket, then poke as many toothpicks as you can fit into the pocket (wooden matchsticks also work well). Allow the glue to set before cutting the butler inserts, or trim or trim them flush with the surface of the cabinet door. Do not break the elongated part of the skewer, cut it with a serrated knife or fine-toothed saw. Once this is done, the screw can be screwed back into the repaired pocket and it will be as tight and secure as when the cabinet was new. This repair method is especially effective for repairing particle board, laminates, and hardwood cabinet materials.

Due to the weight of many doors, it can be more difficult to get through or repair loose hinges on entry doors.

Usually the problem occurs when the hinge screw pulls the wood away from the door frame it is attached to and again repairing the screw pocket is a good first option. Although most door fasteners are only ¾” thick and can be installed directly behind a 2″x4″ structural stud, this often does not replace a 2″x4″ hinge. Door hinge screws are usually only 5/8″ or ¾” long and only only goes into the bowl. This may not be enough to hold a heavy door properly, and the weight of the door will eventually pull the hinge off the hinge. Using the same method for hinge repair – a screw pocket, as we discussed earlier – can work well. Another option is to remove the center hinge screw with a clip and replacing it with a screw long enough to fit into the 2″x4″ stud behind it.

Using a hand or power drill, drill a pilot hole (1/2 the diameter of the screw) into the 2″x4″ in the screw pocket. Door hinge screws are often made of brass and cannot hold up to weathered wood, so a pilot hole is recommended to prevent the screw from binding or breaking. For extra assurance of easy sewing, apply a little beeswax along the threads of the screws before installing (candle wax or pencils work well too).
