How To Pack and Prepare a Used CNC Router For Shipment or Relocation
When buying or selling a used CNC router or CNC machine there are some basic elements needed to minimize the potential for damage in shipment. A CNC router is a robotic cutting system. They have several moving parts as well as electrical components that must be stabilized and protected before shipment. Most CNC routers are too large to ship via enclosed trailer. Most often it has to be delivered via flatbed truck. When the source of the truck for delivery is critical that Trailer Air Ride and fully tarp. The basic concept is to immobilize moving parts (gantry / router assembly and table), support the weight of the coil itself, secure the controller to the table, and weather protect the rail and electrical system.
Here are the basics:
Immobilizing Gantry and Table
For a standard 3 axis CNC router there are 3 areas to stabilize mechanically. X, Y, and Z axes. This can be done in two ways. In an ideal scenario, the original ship’s brackets can be reinstalled. Most machines are shipped new with a factory shipping bracket designed to lock the moving axle. Assuming they are not with the machine, it is recommended to use a ratchet strap to stabilize the moving parts. Depending on the configuration of the machine, at least two straps must be used pulling in opposite directions to create a situation where the gantry or router head assembly is immobilized. If rope is not available, this immobilization can be done using 2×4 wood.
Supports Router Head Assemblies:
The weight of the spindle and router head assembly must be supported during delivery to prevent it from bumping into the road damaging the ball screws that bear the weight during delivery. This is done by lowering the router head into a block of foam or wood and immobilizing it. Essentially the wood or foam carries the weight of the assembly.
controller:
If possible, the controller should be connected to the machine. NEVER DROP THE CABLE!!! I cannot emphasize enough. The controller must be bubble wrapped and secured to the table in the manner provided by the manufacturer. Some manufacturers prefer the control tower to remain upright. Most of the time laying behind the CNC router table is enough. Make sure the controls are secured with straps or tape. It is the most expensive component of the engine and also the most fragile!
Weatherize
After the axis and controls are secured the final step is weatherizing the engine. All exposed and unpainted steel shall be greased or oiled. This includes ball screws and rails. Oil or grease should protect these areas from surface rust that can form if the engine is exposed to rain. As an added precaution, it is recommended to wrap the machine in plastic wrap. One drop bought at your local hardware store should be enough. If the engine is too large to fully wrap, plastic wrap should still be used to cover all of the engine’s electrical components. I also like to use plastic wrap for work as another layer of security in all areas that are mechanically stable to provide more immobilization of any moving parts.
