Crystal Meth – The Dance Of Death

We live in a faster better society. From instant noodles to fast food, from high-speed computers to rapid transit, speed has become an essential part of our culture.

Physically, many people find it difficult to keep up with our modern pace. That’s why they drink over-the-counter yeast pills, caffeinated colas, or drink giga-wave caffeinated triple mocha lattés.

When these no longer work, some turn to more effective stimulant drugs. Why not, they’re fast and strong, right? Yes, but they are also dangerous. They’re a complex group of chemicals that have one thing in common: the ability to ruin your life.

Methamphetamine, also known as ridiculous speed, gives many people the extra energy they crave. Not only are more people using it, but they are using the most potent and highly charged form: crystal meth. Despite being cheap and toxic, the drug became the drug of choice for a new generation of speed chasers.

The 2004 Canadian Drug Abuse Survey measured speed use among Canadians aged 15 and over. Results showed that 6.4% of respondents reported using methamphetamines at least once in their lifetime.

Another survey of four BC school districts reported that up to 8% of students in grades 6-12 had tried crystal metabolism in the 2005 school year.

Combined, these statistics may not exist, but experts say that 90 percent of users become addicted after the first hit. Even a single use of crystal meth can cause immediate, long-lasting physical and mental damage.

However, there are few such tips. They smoke it, whistle it, pop it or shoot it. However, many do not understand what is in it. People making meth aren’t exactly government-approved pharmacists. They are more likely to be lazy people who hide in the bathroom mixing their poison concoction in dirty conditions.

Lethal ingredients

In an August 2004 CBC News article, clandestine laboratories have been found in homes, garages, motel rooms and even cars in middle-class neighborhoods. Meth can be made in a short amount of time, with a small amount of materials. From chemicals, solvents, and equipment, the basic ingredients can be purchased at many stores.

Unlike legal drugs, the illegal kind has no quality control, so users can never be sure of its potency or purity. The ingredients are different and never the same, says the Canadian Relief Society. Ephedrine (from over-the-counter cold medicine), Drano, battery acid, insecticides, solvents, anhydrous ammonia, paint thinner, and muriatic acid.

These toxins form what some describe as a volatile mixture of laundry detergent and lighter fluid. It’s all less because both those who use it and those who produce it are in a relationship. One side gets promoted, the other gets rich. According to police, an investment of about $150 can get up to $10,000 worth of drugs.

Attraction

Imagine a flood of euphoria running through your body; intense super-focused attitude and boundless enthusiasm; making everything a great experience. This is the drug’s appeal to many participants or those looking for long-term energy for daily activities.

A 2005 New Yorker article noted that methamphetamine is known to elevate mood and induce euphoria, increased alertness, and reduced fatigue. In slightly less concentrated forms, the drug was used by truckers trying to drive at night, workers trying to finish an extra shift, and people trying to lose weight.

It’s not expensive either. Amounts as small as a tenth of a gram, called a point, can be obtained for up to five dollars. This is enough to give the user a high for up to 24 hours.

Considered popular as a fashion and club drug, meth has a strong presence in dance clubs, parties and raves. It provides immense energy to keep you spinning to the pounding rhythms of the dance floor all night long. It makes a person feel full of life, strong and sexy, it turns the libido into an overpowering one.

Risks

Crystal Meth is more toxic than crack and more addictive than heroin, and it fries brain cells, experts say. If smoked or injected, the user experiences a strong high known as a high. The first rush is always the most intense and the first sensation is quickly addictive. As dependence develops, larger amounts and higher doses of the drug are required.

Such a fast lasts for days and weeks, allowing little rest for body or mind. Usually, during this period, the abuser does not sleep for three to fourteen days. At the end of the high level, the user undergoes correction; feeling unhappy and uncomfortable, and may become violent.

Chronic behavioral problems such as social isolation and withdrawal are compounded by extreme depression and suicidal thoughts. According to the AIDS Foundation of San Francisco, the long-term effects of methamphetamine use are dire.

The most common sores on users’ bodies are from skin picking due to the sensation of bugs under the skin. The urge to mine or unearth them is unstoppable. Some use knives, glass, pins, or needles to extract for up to ten hours or more. Even if it seems that there are no mistakes, the desire remains. The skin becomes infected and looks very unsightly.

Then there is the risk of tooth decay, which is the result of users not maintaining proper oral hygiene. Brittle and cracked teeth, gum infections, disease and general decay are common among users. Without seeing it, it is difficult to understand the complete destruction of the teeth of long-term abusers. Teeth are so fragile that even eating ice cream can cause them to fall out.

A November 2005 Washington Post article reported that the drug causes long-lasting changes in brain chemistry, particularly in neurotransmitter systems. Notably, the release of large amounts of dopamine appears to affect cognitive abilities such as memory, judgment, reasoning, and verbal skills.

Dr. Paul Thompson, a brain mapping expert at the University of California, Los Angeles, has demonstrated extensive brain damage using high-resolution MRI scans in individuals who have been addicted for up to ten years.

Quoted in a 2004 New York Times article, he said he expected some brain changes, but didn’t expect so much tissue destruction.

The image, published in the June 30 issue of The Journal of Neuroscience, shows a loss of 11 percent of the brain’s surface and tissue in the deeper limbic system, which is involved in drug craving, mood and emotion.

The hippocampus, the part of the brain involved in memory, also lost 8 percent of its tissue. The article states that this is comparable to brain deficits in early Alzheimer’s cases. Heavy users may experience psychotic episodes characterized by paranoia and auditory and visual hallucinations, Prevention Source BC reports.

Long-term physical effects can also include vitamin and mineral deficiencies, reduced resistance to disease, and damage to organs, especially the lungs, liver, and kidneys. The vicious cycle can also damage blood vessels in the brain, which can cause a stroke or cause an irregular heartbeat. Cardiovascular complications and death are known to occur.

Getting out is not easy

Giving up Crystalmeth is as easy as stopping a runaway train. AIDS Foundation of San Francisco After stopping the drug, the user experiences severe drowsiness and depression because the body is not stimulated enough for pleasure. It can be so intense that suicidal thoughts may be considered to ease the pain.

A crash often results in a lack of energy and a massive lack of motivation to perform normal tasks. The day after withdrawal, the user feels sick, depressed, guilty, ashamed and angry. He wants to quit, but his passion is supernaturally strong. The only thing that takes them away is crystal meth. But soon the high disappoints; euphoria turns into insomnia, confusion, loss of productivity.

According to the ex-addict, “It’s not something you become addicted to. It becomes your whole reason for living. You want it so much and you can’t give anything for it. You can’t describe it unless you” I’ve seen it. You can’t explain it until you do it. If you haven’t been there, you can’t imagine it. And then it never goes away.”

Recovery

If you are a lover, you have to hit rock bottom to come back up. According to experts, crystal meth is one of the most addictive street drugs and the most difficult to treat. A 92 percent relapse rate is worse than cocaine. In Canada, provincial health insurance and state recovery programs provide assistance and support for drug addiction recovery.

But withdrawal symptoms, especially depression and physical pain, put many people off. The simplest and most effective strategy is to avoid addiction. It’s not an easy sell to young people, but people who have experienced addiction can demonstrate it effectively. Peer struggle is much more powerful than simple messages that cite threats.

General message to people: crystal meth destroys lives; destroys health, destroys family. Ultimately, the need for speed kills. And what is not killed will be burned. Get the message?
