Healthy Eating – Point of Diminishing Returns?
Look at many weight loss plans or healthy living tips, many of which only require a limited selection of certain healthy foods for weight loss or even a longer active life. If we want to lose weight or have a very active retirement, we need to avoid foods that many people consider delicious. Eat only organic foods or eat only those foods or you will suffer from all kinds of health problems.
Clearly, eating a balanced diet that includes foods that contain a full spectrum of essential nutrients is a key component of good health. Decades of research prove this, and new scientific research confirms the importance of a balanced diet. This is not the story. The question is, do you 100% need to eat this way to live a long, active life without health complications? If you listen to the proponents, they say absolutely yes. There are people who really like this kind of eating, and if that’s what they want, that’s fine. People who support this idea come from different walks of life. Some prefer organic foods, while others strongly believe in eating only healthy foods. Others are personal trainers, fitness coaches, or otherwise involved in fitness. So are these people right? Do we have to give up ice cream, dessert, soda, hamburgers, pizza, or anything else that tastes good but makes us fat forever in order to lose weight or be healthy?
The answer seems to be absolutely not. Magic is, as many suspect, an overused word; moderation. In my experience, I have seen two relatives who are very old, healthy, and still active. My great grandmother lived to be 104. My grandmother is an active 96 and has survived two bouts of cancer, a stroke and other health issues. Neither was completely spartan. My great grandmother loved Coca Cola, fatty pork sausages, pies and ice cream. He didn’t eat these all the time, but he enjoyed them as a treat every now and then. My grandma loves cookies, beer, but also fatty pork, potato chips, and coke. Of course, personal experience is not enough to draw conclusions, so I looked into longevity to see what we can learn about people who have lived longer.
The most interesting story was the case of Jeanne Calment, a French woman who lived to be 122; He was reported to have been alert and physically active up to 120 in all his years. However, he didn’t do anything special to make us live longer, and he did a lot of things that we health care workers can’t do. Calment ate 2 pounds of chocolate a week and even smoked until he was 119 years old! Two observations were made about his lifestyle; he was physically active (cycling to 110) and he handled stress very well. Both of these were repeated observations among other people who lived between the ages of 100 and 110. Their lifestyle consisted of some form of exercise or physical activity and they knew how to deal with stress. There were fewer centenarians who were overweight and had a much lower quality of life. However, the strict, Spartan diet was not common among the extreme centuries, although they did eat foods that were considered healthy for the most part – but only for the most part. None of them claimed to have lived their age by eating only alfalfa sprouts, tofu, bean curd, and raw vegetables 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Many had “diet secrets,” but the “secret” to their longevity was simply not stressing; Shigechio Izumi, the oldest man who ever lived. “The secret to living a long life is not to worry about it.”
Bottom line, I don’t think you need to follow the Martinet diet plan for good health or weight loss. Good nutrition no longer has an additive effect, instead other factors such as genetics, stress levels and physical activity are influencing factors. Make no mistake, most people will have to cut back on junk foods, but you don’t have to give up your favorite foods altogether. In my weight loss plan, I created a “free day,” one day a week, sometimes two, where I ate my favorite foods and ate without counting calories. In retrospect, it didn’t affect my weight loss, but it did help me stay sane. If you want to lose weight, you can eat your favorite foods in moderation. In fact, I find that I can taste and enjoy them more when I eat them only occasionally than I did in my previous lifestyle of eating them every day. Eat healthy most of the time, but sometimes allow yourself to enjoy something you like, if that’s what you want.
