Signs That Your Body Needs A Diet

I know some of you can look at yourself in the mirror and you will say to yourself, “I look healthy but I don’t think I should be on a diet program”. The truth is, although health is usually visible from the outside, most of it happens inside the body.

You run to the drug store for antacids, pills to relieve constipation and diarrhea. Pain relief is close to the new Advil! You tell your story! Here are some signs that your body is telling you that something is wrong.

  1. You are starting to gain weight. Foods that are filled with sweet and salty flavors are foods that can promote weight loss and can increase body weight. Sweetness is also a sense of satisfaction, in Ayurveda, sweet foods can be included in the diet to help with satisfaction.

  2. You have a coating on your tongue. When you wake up in the morning, look at your tongue. If there is a white, yellow or brown coating on the tongue, the food is not digested properly and this is the first symptom to come.

  3. Constipation, gas and bloating are common occurrences in your life. This is often seen as an imbalance of vata with agni manda. Many people use laxatives and gas relieving pills to help the problem. Ayurveda says that digestion and vata should be balanced. Many vata type people love smoothies and green salads: two of the worst things a vata person can do for their digestion. They should eat more cooked food and less salad. Cold salad and too much air for vata constitution.

  4. Frequent diarrhea. This can be a condition that many people live in and don’t realize that the fire element is out of balance. Diarrhea can be your body’s way of getting rid of harmful substances. It is good to let the diarrhea continue for a few days and heal on its own but if diarrhea happens regularly, you should check your diet for foods that disturb the digestive system or balance the fire element in the body. Many times diarrhea can reduce the body’s water element, making it dehydrated and there is no efficient assimilation of food and people are malnourished. Stress is one of the world’s silent killers. Stress will cause many diseases and one of them is heart disease. This is a heart blood vessel disorder that can lead to a heart attack. Other cardiovascular diseases include stroke, high blood pressure, angina (chest pain), and rheumatic heart disease.

  5. You often feel depressed or anxious. Ayurveda states that food affects the mind, emotions and consciousness. Anxiety and depression can be a result of ama (food that has not been properly digested)

  6. Pain in the joints

  7. Chronic inflammation

  8. Heaviness and weakness after eating

So what are some things you can do?

1. No more drinking cold water

2. Only 1/2 cup of warm water with food

3. No more smoothies in the morning – for many people this promotes weight gain and ama

4. No coffee in the morning on an empty stomach

5. Eat fruit alone

6. Sit down to eat

7. Eat your biggest meal during the day
