Lap-Band Success Story Part 2 – Achieving "Results Not Typical"
In my last article “Lap-Band Success Stories: Achieving “Atypical Results” (Part 1),” I shared strategies for achieving and maintaining normal weight with gastric band weight loss surgery. In this article, we explore these strategies in more detail. As a refresher here is my understanding of the reality of the average weight, or “typical outcome,” for people with serious weight problems based on research I’ve done:
For diet and exercise/medical therapy:
- 25% of excess weight loss (EWL) in only 10 – 40% of patients
- 95% of patients recover (can say yo-yo)
For Gastric Appeal:
- 50% of excess weight is lost (EWL) in average patients in 2 – 3 years
- The results are durable and the same for gastric patients in 3 years and beyond according to published studies
I have experienced the life changing benefits of Lap-Band surgery – a 90 pound loss or 100% excess weight loss, and have been maintaining it since 2007. The typical result for me would have been to lose and maintain half of the excess weight. Developing my first article, here I learned how to get “RESULTS NOT TYPICAL.”
- Journaling helps me find small changes in what I eat to increase protein and decrease calories. Journaling helps keep me accountable; even today I periodically journal.
- I always have a plan, or at least a plan B. I travel a lot, and seem to have unlimited access to food that can get me into trouble. I always have a source of food with me to ensure my success. I’m not afraid to special order at a restaurant, or ask a hotel to open the gym at 4:30 am. There is no excuse.
- Having a good support structure is so important, FOREVER. Continue to build your team.
- It comes to terms that this time the weight loss is really permanent. You will never fail again. You will never suddenly wake up fat again. You have tools that help with portion sizes, hunger, and satiety. As long as you work with these tools, they will help you.
- Yes, filling can still help; It is one of the features of the band that no other weight loss surgery has.
- Stay close to your surgeon and his staff. Take advantage of the resources they offer.
- Pay it forward; by helping others on this journey, I am always learning, and it feels good!
- Create a body image; it takes a long time to see your new body as others see it. Enjoying what I see in the mirror helps me stay motivated. Learn to say thank you when people compliment your appearance. This is difficult for us, who always struggle with weight.
- Admit that you are struggling and ask your team for help.
- Step up exercise. The benefits of exercise are many. Cardio burns calories; more muscle burns more calories, muscle is more compact than fat so lose inches, exercise is good for physical and mental health. Then for me there are happy endorphins – I’m addicted. Exercise makes me feel good mentally and physically which starts a wonderful cycle.
- Reward yourself and take care of yourself.
- Your life. Do what you’ve always avoided because you’re too fat, or embarrassed.
It is important to understand your goals for weight loss, health, and quality of life. If you have a Lap-Band or REALIZE band you can learn from other successful people in the Banded Living community to get the most out of your tool.
