Make Weight Loss Last Forever – Why ALL Diets Are Doomed to Failure

My very good friend, Aaron, weighed almost 300lbs when he was young. One day she decided she wasn’t going to be fat anymore. He has lost and kept off almost 80lbs of fat over the past 6 years.

People often ask him “how did you do Aaron?”

The answer is simple, “Diet and exercise.”

Everyone who heard it seemed disappointed, as if they expected something else. It’s as if they hope for something easier than changing their way of life.

Just so there is no misunderstanding, all there is to losing body fat, or gaining muscle is just diet and exercise. The rest are just details. I deal in the details. I tell people how to get the most bang for their diet and exercise money. Yes, better information can make a big difference in your results, but nothing can help you if you are not willing to change the way you live – your “lifestyle” sounds like a cliché. Being a cliché doesn’t make it any less true, nor does it mean you actually apply it to your life.

Every year, millions of Americans lose millions of pounds of body fat, all at once. The bad news is, every year, at least 98% of them get ALL, and maybe some. It seems that most people actually struggle more with keeping it off for a long time, then with taking it off in the first place (not that taking it is easy despite what you may have heard on TV last night :-)).

KEEP FAT FOR LIFE

#1. Dieter’s Fatal Flaw

For some reason, even when someone finds a plan that works, they think that once they reach their target weight/size, they can just go back to “normal.” They think if you lose fat once, it will stay dead for the rest of your life. He doesn’t believe this intellectually, but emotionally this is exactly what he thinks and exactly what he does. Again, I know that no one is stupid enough to say this out loud to others, or even think it, but almost everyone carries this unconscious belief.

“Normal” eating and lack of regular/smart exercise is what got you into this mess. There is no magic that happens when you eat better and exercise that will “fat proof” your body for life. If you go back to your old ways, you should go back to your old XXL shirts.

#2. Reality check – find out what you do every week

Obviously, either you or I hit the genetic jack-pot. Maybe you can eat what you want when you’re young (I’m jealous, by the way), but, clearly, that’s not the case. Our bodies will not stay lean on their own. We also need to engage our minds, but this is really simple:

A.) Find out where you want to maintain: is it a certain clothing size, a certain weight, or a certain belly or waist size? I recommend measuring your stomach and/or waist, because measurements can be deceiving, and different manufacturers measure things differently.

B.) Weekly check-ins: Do the same day, at the same time, on the same size / tape measure as much as possible. That is, if you work out every Monday night around 7pm, make sure you measure before your workout to stay consistent.

C.) Don’t allow yourself to gain more than ½ to 1inch or 5lbs where you want to keep it. Don’t be too much sometimes. Gravity is automatic, you have to apply your will to get what you want out of life. Stick to your diet, and be smart or extend your exercise routine to get back to where you want to be.

Remember, in fat loss and muscle gain, you get exactly what you do, not necessarily what you want.

#3. Learn how to enjoy a new lifestyle

Sports and high-intensity activities can be fun. It is an excellent stress reliever. It gives you an endorphin “high.” It can be a fun way to spend time with friends and family. Consistency gives you incredible pride, self-confidence and self-mastery (self-discipline = deep personal growth). It makes you look good. It creates more time in your life because:

A.) Will increase energy levels – have more productive hours in the day = more time.

B.) It sharpens your mind – you learn faster and can put more in every hour of work, so you get more out of every hour.

C.) It improves immunity – if you are sick less, you have more time for productivity and fun.

D.) Regular training requires you to manage your time better – if you have to start planning the week in advance, you will find that you can do more in the same amount of time.

Fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy products, nuts and seeds, lean meats, and a limited amount of starchy carbohydrates can ALL be delicious if you prepare them correctly. Eating right can be more enjoyable than eating “ordinary” because “ordinary” food only gives pleasure to the tongue. But eating healthy can be delicious, and it can make you physically, mentally, and emotionally healthier (plus you won’t feel sleepy after eating).

And, yes, there is always some room for ordinary desserts and other unhealthy foods. Just don’t underestimate how much and/or how often you can use it.
