How To Calculate Cubic Metres (CBM) When Shipping
Determining the Cubic Meters or CBM is the first step you must take to determine how to ship your cargo. You don’t want to ship FCL cargo as FCL Groupage cargo or you don’t want to ship FCL Groupage Cargo as FCL, unless you have reached or exceeded the cargo break-even point that I explained in the FCL vs. FCL group.
Consignment CBM is always calculated
L x W x H
for example 3.20 x 2.45 x 1.56
= 12.23 CBM
For Seafreight shipments, the idea is to calculate CBM in meters. If you have 320cm
then convert it to 3.2 meters before starting the calculation.
If you have 45cm, your formula will have 0.45 meters.
A 20ft General Container or dry container will hold a maximum of 33.2CBM, while a 40ft General Container or dry container will hold 67.7CBM.
A 40ft High Cube that will allow you to pack more and will hold a maximum of 76.3CBM.
All of the above are subject to commodity lines and packing methods.
40ft General Container and High Cube container are only used for larger volume cargo and not heavier weight cargo. In my article on cargo weight and road weight limits, I discuss this.
Also remember is the length of the cargo, you cannot pack a 13 meter steel pipe in a 40ft General container because it is only 12,036 meters long. In this case, the right equipment will be needed.
For air cargo shipping, the methods used by the airline industry are:
Volume / Weight.
If you have 5 boxes of the same size that is 23cmx34cmx56cm (LxWxH)
Assume that the weight of each box of 5 is 10kgs.
The first thing to do is separate Volumetric from Actual Weight.
Volumetric Weight Actual Weight
(23x34x56) div 6000 10kgs per box
= 43792 divided by 6000
= 7.30kg per box
For 5 boxes: 7.30 x 5 For 5 boxes: 10 x 5
= 36.5kg = 50kg
The correct weight to be declared to the airline here will be the actual weight
from a box of 50kgs.
