Cardiac Rehabilitation – Rejuvenating Your Heart After Heart Surgery or Attack

Cardiac rehabilitation also known as cardiac rehab is a medical program organized to help improve heart health and well-being after a heart attack or heart surgery to rejuvenate the heart.

Cardiac rehab aims to set up a personalized plan to restore your strength, reduce your risk of heart disease, prevent your current condition from worsening and improve your quality of life.

The American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology both recommend Cardiac rehabilitation because it increases the chance of survival after heart surgery/heart attack.

Cardiac rehab usually begins during a hospital stay (especially after a heart attack or heart surgery) and continues with a supervised program on an OPD basis until you can safely do a home maintenance program.

Results of Cardiac Rehab

The outcome of a cardiac rehab program depends on the collective efforts of the cardiac rehab team and the long-term commitment of the patient. The team includes rehabilitation cardiologists, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, dietitians/nutritionists, psychologists and psychiatrists.

Cardiac rehab helps:

  • Recover well after a heart attack or heart surgery

  • Reduce risk factors such as high blood pressure, blood cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, smoking, mood swings and physical inactivity that cause coronary heart disease and other heart problems.

  • Improve well-being and quality of life

  • Implement healthy lifestyle modifications that include a healthy diet, physical activity, stress management, etc.

  • Prevent heart problems and related risks.

Phases of Cardiac Rehab:

Cardiac rehab is often divided into phases that include medical treatment and evaluation, supervised exercise training, stress reduction counseling, lifestyle modification and dietary counseling that help you return to an active and normal life. This can take up to 3-6 months. These phases are;

Medical treatment and evaluation: The cardiac rehabilitation team evaluates you in terms of your physical and medical abilities/limitations and examines your conditions and risk factors to create an appropriate rehab program to ensure its safety and effectiveness. The team will track your progress over time.

Physical activity and sports: After surgery, you will be able to return to a normal life with the combined efforts of you and the rehab team who will train you to improve your cardiovascular fitness quickly and safely. Don’t be afraid if you haven’t exercised before. You will be trained in the correct exercise technique. This includes warming up, walking, cycling, stretching, rowing and other activities that help build endurance. Ultimately, you need to undergo strength training to build muscle strength and fitness.

Initially for 6-8 weeks after heart surgery you will be recommended the following guidelines;

  • Increase your activity level gradually.

  • Housework can be done but must not stand for more than 15 minutes in one place.

  • Do not push or pull heavy objects

  • Do not lift heavy weights

  • Climb stairs only if recommended

  • Walk daily according to the guidelines given by the rehab team.

Lifestyle and diet modifications: Your nutritionist/dietitian will give you guidelines on a diet that will help you lose excess weight. They will help you eat heart-healthy foods to reduce the fat, cholesterol and sodium content of your diet. Lifestyle modifications should be done to eliminate unhealthy habits such as smoking, drinking, etc.

Counseling and Support: Depression is often associated after surgery which makes rehabilitation more challenging and has a major impact on life and health. Changing your mental health often takes time and you may feel depressed, anxious, not interested in work and attending social gatherings for a few weeks. Counseling and emotional support from your family and rehab team will help you overcome stress and lead a happy life. You will be guided to overcome stress and fear to help you continue your active lifestyle with more energy and motivation.

Outlook

Even after completing the cardiac rehabilitation program, you still need to be patient and continue to exercise and follow the diet you learned during the program for a lifetime to maintain heart health.

Your new diet and exercise habits will allow you to return to your normal routine because the success of your cardiac rehab program depends more on your dedication. The more faithfully you follow the rehab team’s recommendations, the better you will do.
