How Many Calories Should You Burn for Weight Loss

If you rely on classic aerobic cardio for weight loss, you might spend 30 minutes on the machine trying to burn some calories. But what is possible? Does burning 500 calories a day cause you to lose 1 pound of fat per week?

Well, according to science, it should. But if you do, you probably won’t be reading this article.

I used to write a column on fat loss myths for Men’s Fitness magazine. Here is the classic weight loss topic I covered.

Myth: I need to burn 500 calories per workout to lose fat.

Perhaps one of the worst inventions for fat loss is the calorie counting monitor on treadmills, elliptical machines, and stairmasters.

Because of this, millions of men and women are now obsessed with how many calories they burn each session. You might be one of those people, watching them slow down during a slow cardio session. All while knowing that you can wipe out a 30-minute, 300-calorie treadmill session with one fell swoop of Krispy Kreme hands.

Too many people think that if they don’t burn 300-500 calories per session, they won’t lose fat. After all, you’ve been featured many times in a good fitness/fashion magazine.

The problem with this approach to fat loss is a lot. First of all, it’s hard to say if the calorie counter is even accurate. A story on CBS news shows that cardio machines increase calorie burn by 20%.

Next, relying on slow cardio for advanced fat loss is relatively pointless and at the very least, inefficient. It takes a long time for you to burn a lot of calories and one study showed that men who only used cardio to lose weight had a lower resting metabolic rate. You really cancel out your calorie burn by relying solely on cardio. On the other hand, men in the same study using strength training did not experience a reduced metabolic rate.

So what is the solution to burning fat in a faster and more efficient way? The answer is to use strength and interval training to burn fewer calories during less exercise time, but with more intense exercise.

Your body will burn more calories after exercise (when you use intervals) than after doing slow cardio and your metabolism will stay high. Some experts call this the afterburn effect. How do you create an interval? Well, you can sprint for 30 seconds and rest for 90 seconds and repeat for 6 sets – use a better bike or treadmill if you have experience with it.

In the short term, these intervals will cause your muscles to go crazy with activity (I call it metabolic turbulence). This crazy increase in metabolism causes a lot of calorie burning after exercise to get the body back to normal. As a result, you will burn more fat and more calories in the post-workout period as your body tries to control it.

Now there are times when you want to count calories, but when you count and determine how many calories you eat each day. Again, you can wipe out all your workouts in less than a minute just by eating junk food. Without the structure and discipline of your nutrition, there is nothing my program can do to help you lose fat.

So exercise nutritional control and interval training. Here are two ways to count calories that will help you lose fat and get lean.
