Racquetball For Cardio and Weight Loss

About 4 months ago I decided that it was long enough for me to sit at my desk and hardly leave the house except to go to the store or go to church. Working from home definitely has its perks, but over the past 2 years I’ve gained about 20 pounds just sitting around and before I know it, I’m feeling really lazy.

Last year I played racquetball once or twice with a friend and it was a blast. I was horribly out of shape though. I have low stamina and fast breathing. Besides, I really don’t know how to play games.

So I decided what I needed to do to help with my health issues and get out of the house. So I signed up for a membership at a local club and started playing twice a week. Before that I started playing tennis again (before I thought of racquetball) and loved it. But honestly, it’s not nearly as powerful.

After an hour of racquetball you burn around 600 calories which means you’ve got a great start to losing weight there. I will play for about half an hour twice a week. Then once in a while, I’ll spend the rest of the day maybe in the afternoon or evening.

Luckily, I had a few friends who wanted to start with me, so I got to study and learn the rules (more on that in a minute). Luckily for us, a friend’s husband was on leave from the military and decided to play with us while he was here. We found out in the first game that actually played semi-professional! He is amazing. He made us all look terrible, but nothing helped my game more than his tips and skills.

When you play against people who don’t know how to play, you get lazy and don’t push yourself. But, let’s talk about the rules.

Basically you have two players (singles) and the server will stand in the middle of the court and hit the ball against the back wall. They must cause the ball to hit the back wall and bounce to the floor behind the serving line, but without hitting the front wall (the wall behind you).

The ball might hit one of the side walls, but that’s it. If the serve reaches 3 walls, it is out. The server gets two attempts to put the ball into play. Once the ball is in play, however, ANYTHING goes. Any wall is a game and you can make the ball hit as many walls as you want.

This is how you win. Once the ball hits the back wall, it can only bounce on the floor once before it has to hit the back wall again. So if you hit the back wall, the ball bounces once, the other player has to cause the ball to hit the back wall before it bounces again, which resets it.

So to win, just hit the ball so that the other players can’t reach it in time and it bounces more than once on the floor. It’s simple, and not only is it a blast, but it’s a great way to get fit.
