Top 10 Weight Loss Myths

In this article, we explore the top ten weight loss myths, and give you the real scoop on dieting, health and weight loss.

Myth #1: If you want to lose weight, you need to eat a low-fat diet.

Sorry Weight Watchers fans, this is totally fake. A low-fat diet is a low-carb diet that can cause weight gain because it contains more carbohydrates than fat. In fact, eating the right type of fat (e.g. coconut oil) can help you lose weight.

Myth #2: If you want to lose weight, you have to eat a low-carb diet like Atkins.

While it’s true that reducing your carbs can be beneficial for binge eaters, one of the biggest problems with Atkins is the high failure rate in the long run. Some people find dieting too restrictive and boring and can experience negative side effects. The best diet is a whole foods, all natural diet with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables—something the carnivore Atkins plan lacks.

Myth #3: A diet high in saturated fat, like Atkins, will cause heart attacks, weight gain and high cholesterol. You should reduce saturated fat and replace it with “heart healthy” polyunsaturated oils like margarine, vegetable oil and corn.

Not. This is just a myth perpetuated by the vegetable oil industry and bad science.

1. There is no evidence that saturated fat causes high cholesterol or heart disease

2. There is no evidence that “high” cholesterol causes heart disease – in fact in women, it appears to be heart protective.

3. High-fat and high-cholesterol foods do not increase blood cholesterol.

4. Polyunsaturated oils can increase the risk of cancer.

Myth #4: Vegetarianism is the key to health and a slim body.

It may be for some people, but we have seen several patients get sick and weak from a vegetarian diet and when we encouraged them to try eating animal protein as an experiment, they made miraculous recoveries. We have also seen many vegetarians gain weight due to their high carbohydrate intake. We’re not saying don’t be a vegetarian, we’re saying you should experiment with what’s right for your metabolic needs.

Myth #5: Pharmaceutical drugs are good weight loss aids.

Anna Nicole Smith took various prescription drugs to lose weight. They killed him. There are various pharmaceutical drugs from appetite suppressants (Phentermine, Phen-fen) to fat blockers (Alli, Orlistat), to anti-depressants (Wellbutrin, Zoloft) and all these drugs have serious negative side effects that will only serve. to mess up your physiology and cause you to gain more weight when you go off. I used to work in a clinic with a bariatric doctor who prescribed meds and I saw the yo-yo cycle again.

Myth #6: The best way to start a weight loss program is to do 45 minutes of cardiovascular exercise a day or walk 10,000 steps a day.

Don’t get me wrong, cardiovascular exercise has a lot of benefits but if you want to get the most bang for your buck, and you don’t have a lot of time, then you want to learn about 20 minutes. high intensity interval training. You will burn fat at seven times the rate of walking or other forms of cardio and unlike cardio, you will build muscle mass which is key to increasing your metabolic rate.

Myth #7: Reducing your calorie intake with low calorie diets, meal replacement bars, shakes, liquid diets will help you lose weight quickly and easily.

The World Health Organization has stated that a diet of less than 2,200 calories for adults is starvation. We have seen clients follow popular weight loss programs like Jenny Craig or The Zone on a 1,200 calorie per day diet and not lose a pound. So we told them to increase their food intake to at least 2,200 calories a day and make sure that their diet is 100% REAL FOOD, not processed food they have been eating and guess what? They LOST weight! It’s funny what your body is willing to do when it doesn’t feel like it has to store every calorie you eat because it’s KELAR!

Myth #8: Sugar is high in calories so you’ll lose pounds if you replace it with diet soda and artificial sweeteners.

Ha! It killed me because I sacrificed two years of my life doing nothing but reading research on artificial sweeteners for my book Sweet Sweets, and the research showed in animals and humans that artificial sweeteners can cause weight gain. Yes, that’s true. Splenda, Nutrasweet and all the other toxic chemicals that have been touted as the golden keys to a svelte figure actually increase hunger and cause the body to make more insulin, the fat-building hormone.

But don’t take my word for it, read the book yourself. If you ever eat another diet food sweetened with artificial sweeteners after reading it, then return the book and I’ll give you a 100% refund. (Be warned, these books have been selling like hotcakes and have never returned a single one which makes me so happy to be able to share it with diet coke addicts.)

Myth #9: You have a high chance of permanent weight loss success on any of the popular diet programs: Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, LA Weight Loss, South Beach Diet, EDiets, Curves, Nutrisystem, etc.

You have a chance to lose weight but it is quite low. You need to address all the factors that can prevent you from losing weight in a holistic way that includes mind, body and spirit.

Myth #10: Losing weight is all about calories in and calories out, eat less and exercise more. Oh, I want something simple! I could have skipped ten grueling years of pre-med and medical school and only had people write down their caloric intake and then tell them how to cut calories with LA Lites (bars and shakes) and Nutrisystem astronaut food.

But in my experience there are many other factors that can cause weight gain such as: food allergies, hormone deficiency, food addiction, compulsive eating, anxiety, depression, addiction and other relationship problems, metabolic imbalance, processed food, low calorie intake, sluggish metabolism, lack of goals, life goals or spiritual foundations, social conditions, lack of EFA, neurotransmitter imbalances, wrong exercise, and the list goes on and on.

If you have some of these factors working against you, you may always struggle with your weight until you get it right.
