Hydration is a very important factor in any athlete’s life and must be when playing a high intensity sport like netball. The body loses about 2 liters of water per day – even without exercise. Imagine how much you lose after an intense netball session! Water is an essential component of our body, in fact it is the most abundant ingredient. Without it, our blood wouldn’t flow to our muscles (or our brains), and we wouldn’t be able to cool ourselves or regulate our temperature at all.

If we lose less than 3% of our body weight through sweating, we are at risk. but it’s not just the surrounding games where athletes need to take in fluids. Water is the best choice for hydration. Water that is not sweetened, flavored, colored or otherwise infused. Your body needs clean, plain water. Any other liquid is always effective for hydration because it contains water.

However, sports drinks are more interesting than water for two reasons. First: they taste good. They have a sweet and fruity aroma. The advantage here is that athletes will drink more if they like the taste of the water more than the taste. The second reason is the additives in sports drinks. These additives have nothing to do with hydration. They are associated with bursts of energy. In fact, the high water content of these drinks makes them effective. For example, juices and sodas are terrible at hydrating because they contain too many additives. Sports drinks have more market appeal than water. These reasons mean that athletes remember drinking and continue to consume fluids.

While water is the best option for hydration, you can stay healthy by eating water-rich foods during play and practice. Fruits, soups, and yogurts all have high water content and are great options for snacking during and after the game.

But what about other drinks? We know juices and sodas are out of the question, and I’m afraid the news isn’t good for most other drinks. Coffee, tea and alcohol are dehydrating liquids. Each of them removes water from the bloodstream to help the body process the various toxins and chemicals it contains. If you want to stay on top of your game and stay hydrated, avoiding stimulants and depressants is the golden rule.

You cannot cross water to quench your thirst. But for both thirst quenching and an extra boost of electrolytes and carbohydrates, a sports drink is a great option that will keep you energized and wanting to keep drinking.
