Is the Paleo Diet the Perfect Diet?

Recently I wrote about the perfect diet. In investigating and trying the Paleo Diet I was able to find the perfect diet at least for me and maybe for you. For more than forty years I have been very interested in diet and the effects of diet on health and longevity. I have been a vegetarian, eat low carb, low fat, high protein, etc. Not so much to lose weight (I have maintained a weight of 205 pounds @ 6’3″ for over twenty years, thanks to diet and exercise.) But to feel healthy and live life to the fullest.

The more I read about diet, the more convinced I am that whole, natural, unprocessed foods are the key to health and cure many modern chronic diseases. For me any weight loss diet will help you lose weight, if you stick with it. The problem is that most people fall off the diet too quickly and go back to their old eating habits only to gain the weight back and pose health risks.

The important thing is not to diet, but to adopt a lifestyle that is conducive to maintaining a good weight and healthy health. Furthermore, a proper lifestyle eating program will also protect you from high blood pressure, high cholesterol and other chronic diseases that plague western civilization.

One eating plan that claims to do all of the above is the Paleo or Caveman Diet. This diet used only the foods available to early humans. Early humans consumed fruits and vegetables along with lean protein from wild animals and fish. Today’s Paleo diet focuses on fruits, nuts and vegetables available, lean beef, chicken, eggs and fish.

It’s basically a low carb – protein diet and fits my lifestyle of eating unprocessed food. Ideally you have a garden and hunt and fish so you can provide some or all of your food from organic and/or wild sources. Luckily I live in the countryside and although I don’t hunt, I have a garden and fish, plus a hunting family; so I can stay close to the diet in its purest form.

Here are some benefits of the diet:

1 The Paleo Diet doesn’t require hard-to-find items.

2. Food is a daily staple, not expensive, exotic food.

3. Food preparation is the same or similar to your current cooking method.

4. You never have to warn guests, family or friends who are on some strange diet that does not allow you to eat what they are serving. (At least don’t eat too much bread.)

Also, I don’t go on any diet except to embarrass my friends or family. I will just skip a couple of items like white bread or pasta or eat a small amount and go back to my regular meal program the next day.

Does the Paleo diet just work for you? If you are interested in trying the diet there is an excellent cookbook by Nikki Young “Te Paleo Cookbook”. Nikki has many execellent recipes from snacks to desserts. Is the Paleo diet the perfect diet? Well near perfect for me. Maybe it will be the perfect diet for you too.
