Are Appetizers to Blame for a Fatter US?

There are few things better than spending time with friends and family. There are also those important dates that we spend getting to know people. Many of these take place in the nation’s restaurants. One of the many traditions before we even ask our meal to start out with an appetizer. This is a bad move.

Appetizers are supposed to tide us over until our food arrives. We have been in a situation to eat them that they have their own small part separate in the menu. Don’t fall for it.

Appetizers are dangerous on several levels. First, they start what is already a high calorie, fat, salt, sugar, and sodium evening. To try to follow this up with some healthy entrées like ordering the biggest burger and fries combo and then balancing it out with a diet soda. Sloppy. Plus, they just add to your bill. Eating out can be an expensive proposition. Don’t add to the damage by paying more to make yourself fatter. Finally, they will invite you to drink more. Many appetizers are filled with sodium. This makes your mouth dry and you drink more. Now this might not be all bad if you drink more water, but sweet teas, cocktails and sodas just add empty calories to your waistline.

So what can we do? Well, there are 3 things you can do to help lose weight and win the appetizer battle.

  1. Skip It. There is no law that says we have to have an appetizer with every meal. Most of us don’t do this at home so why should we do it when we go out. Just order an entrée and skip the appetizer. Now if you order a healthy meal then you have a healthy evening. If you order a meal that is not so healthy at least you do not increase the damage and make it twice as bad.
  2. Share It. Nothing says I love you like a few extra pounds. Misery loves company and this might be one of the better times to show the bad. Here, the more people you can share with the better. If you share it with 2 people it will reduce the damage in half. 3 people will be cut by the third and others.
  3. It’s soup or salad. Make sure you do your research because too much soup or salad can be worse than a meal. With soups, they are usually high in fat and sodium. The problem with salads is that we can add so much that they become diet busters in disguise. High-fat dressings, cheese, pork, etc. The list can continue to be added to the salad so that it is not healthy.

Don’t let the night get off to a bad start. Your evening should be about fun and relationships. You don’t have to consume enough calories at the beginning of your meal. Win the appetizer battle by skipping, sharing or choosing a soup or salad. Your heart, hips and arteries will thank you. And you’ll be even happier when you can come back in a pair of jeans that make your butt look so good.
