Top Tips for Getting Away From It All, Without Actually Getting Away

I’ve just booked a holiday, the kind of holiday I’ve never booked before… an all inclusive week long spa break. I almost always went looking for something; adventure, creativity, exploration (of self and the world), romance, culture, learning…but now I know it’s all right there on my doorstep. I don’t need a holiday and, strangely enough, I feel like I do. such a holiday is needed!

It got me thinking, and in a recent survey I did in my head, it seems like a lot of people have reached a certain point, let’s call it a breaking point, and decided they need a holiday. According to the aforementioned survey, the top ten reasons for taking leave were;

1) Need relief from work/life stress

2) To relax

3) Spending quality time with loved ones

4) Habit – “we always get away this time of year”.

5) A break from the norm

6) New experience/different culture

7) Have some fun – nightlife, sporting events or just an adventure.

8) Get some sun/get some sun (to feel happy/look healthy)

9) It’s on my bucket list – “I’ve always wanted to go there.”

10) Facebook shows everyone else doing it and I need new pictures to make everyone jealous.

The funny thing about holidays is that sometimes booking them seems to add to the stress. For example, people often book two week breaks and then spend months telling others (before and after) that they can’t get anything else because they just paid/were on holiday (This, of course, should include a new wardrobe and toiletries). There are also those who worry about their jobs before going and try to tie up ALL their loose ends (they cannot delegate) or absent or when they return to hundreds of emails. This kind of thinking leads some to believe that they cannot take a break at all.

So, how can you get the results that a holiday can provide without going on a holiday?

Here are my top tips to avoid running away from it all:

1) Make the most of your free time – don’t come home on Friday night and have dinner in front of the TV. Planning a date night; A quick drink or dinner after work doesn’t cut into your relaxation time, that’s part of it!

2) Schedule a few hours on a weekend or weeknight to do something for you. Get creative, read a quiet book in a cafe or just sit in a warm bath. Make sure other people know it’s happening and it’s for you… not to distance yourself from them, but to reconnect with yourself. Plus, plan some quality time with your loved ones—going up to soccer practice or grocery shopping with your partner doesn’t count!

3) Think good thoughts and you won’t really notice the rain… and share it with others, smile at strangers.

4) Have a themed night in Mexico, Italy, France, Asian countries. Invite everyone to bring a dish that uses unusual fruits and vegetables, dress up, find tunes, decorate the dining room, rent an appropriate movie… bring it. culture to you.

5) Make a weekend adventure once a month – jump on a random bus, stick your finger on a map, make a list of places you want to go and get to, put ideas in a hat and pick one, or just go for a walk and get off track. The key here is to know what you can uncover.

6) Have a night out with the girls – light up the fake tan and blast some summery tunes whenever you’re in the mood.

7) Focus on what you have – I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, people who are grateful are always much happier than those who chase something else. Write a thank you note every couple of days and reflect as needed.

8) Relaxation – Meditate, swim, do a yoga/mindfulness class, relax… whatever works for you… and do it often.

9) Really wonder at the things around you – look at things differently and you will find many wonders in your world.

10) Be silly – Losing your hair isn’t just about kids or alcohol. Dance in the kitchen and sing in the street!
