Lessons From Running, How Running Became Therapy for This Non-Runner
Running for therapy is really therapy. You’ve heard it before, but it’s true. Running has taught me more about life and myself than anything else I have ever undertaken.
First, let me say that I have never considered myself a runner. Actually, I used to consider myself a “hater” type of person.
Here are some common misconceptions about running before I start taking it seriously:
- It always seemed like an elite sport to me.
- People who ran were thin and strong.
- I have always associated running with fit, strong and healthy people.
A few years later, after my second child, I decided to lose weight and turned to running. I didn’t have a bike, and the pool and fitness centers were miles away. Plus, I didn’t think I could afford the equipment or the memberships. So I started running. Again. For some reason this time I caught the bug.
It wasn’t until several years later that I felt the need to lose weight and resumed almost no exercise. Actually, it started as a simple walk.
I was motivated to get up early every morning and go for a walk. Soon this was not enough for me and I started running several hundred meters at a time. I think to the next lamppost or the tree to the left. Then I would walk again. Then I picked up my momentum again. Finally, after a few months, I was basically ready to run. It felt great! It was a while back when I started my new startup business.
One day I had a bit of a breakthrough. I quarreled with my husband who was at work. I worked from home and by the end of this conversation I was so angry I was ready to throw things. For some reason, I decided to take a walk and “burn off steam”. By the time I finished the 45-minute walk, not only had I calmed down, but I couldn’t remember why I was so angry with my husband. It was a light bulb because if walking could do that for me, imagine what running could do for my stress.
That’s when running saved me. I would get really upset and kick out. I would take my daily stress out and start running. I find that running calms my runaway thoughts. Then it started helping me think better. After releasing the emotion, I had room for rational thought. Things didn’t look so dire after the run. The thought of waking up drenched in sweat at 3 a.m. doesn’t seem so bad to me. I got better answers after running.
Running didn’t save my business (it was too far), but it did save me from going over the edge. In the end, it was just business. I came out of it a marathoner and runner (and still alive). I’ve found that running helps with balance. I am a high energy person. When I’m not in a good place, I need to run to burn off the extra energy that turns into frustration and anger. Things that used to bother me before I became a runner didn’t bother me when I was running regularly. It felt like why spend energy on this. I have important things to do, like running!
