Breathe, I’m not telling you to get your belly in the waistband of your pants! By making some simple but smart decisions before the next big day arrives, you can make it through the next big day without putting on any extra pounds.

1.) For holidays where candy is the focus of the day, buy or make sugar-free candy in advance. This will allow you to go about your day like everyone else without any feelings. However, don’t eat too many sugar-free candies at once. Some sugar-free ingredients can cause gas, bloating, or diarrhea when eaten in excess. (I see this as a natural reminder to eat everything in moderation.)

2.) When you’re invited to someone’s house for a holiday meal, offer to bring dessert to help out the host, or at least to complement whatever the host is planning. There are so many great low-carb, sugar-free, or natural fruit dessert recipes out there that it’s easy to find a dessert that’s delicious for everyone, while making sure you have something unique but functional in your diet.

3.) Be proactive in planning the holiday party and dinner. Instead of hoping that a good cook (who makes really good but really fattening food, potatoes and chocolate pie) will invite you to their home, invite them to your home! Virtually all traditional holiday foods have healthy, low-carb versions. It’s easy to plan a whole special meal to help you maintain and even lose weight.

4.) If you don’t normally keep a diary of everything you eat, starting a food diary a week or so before a long vacation period will help you get through the time with great success. Even if you commit to keeping a food diary shortly after the holidays (set a quit date in advance), having this tool can give you motivation and determination during those tough days. No one likes to be told that they ate a whole pineapple upside-down cake on dairy products.

5.) Deal with the stress of a special day or special event before it happens. Start walking regularly before you get into stressful days. Even if you’re on the run, take a daily vitamin and mineral supplement to help your body function more efficiently. Try to allow any sense of humor, you should come out in the most difficult time.

Going through a holiday or a special event is not easy. (No pun intended.) However, if you’re honest about the tough choices but forgive the bad ones, you can avoid any major potential negative effects of the big day.
