Revolutionary Penny Black
The Penny Black was first issued in 1840 and is so named, because it costs one cent and is made with black ink. These stamps are prepaid stamps, the world’s earliest gummed stamps from the general postal system.
It was issued in England and Ireland in May 1840 and was planned to be used from May 6, 1840. Initially, not all Post Offices throughout England accepted the official issue of stamps except in London where all Post Offices did. they were equipped with the first official stamps.
The Two Penny Blue was issued on May 8, 1840. The Penny Black is quite rare and a fantastic stamp to collect and is almost sure to feature in the veteran collector’s album.
Prior to the creation of the new form of delivery, postage was mainly based on the weight of the package/envelope and the distance of each package. These rates are actually paid by the destination and not the sender.
With this new postal system and new stamps, the payment of postage is the responsibility of the sender and the complexity of individual postage calculations is reduced with lower rates.

Back in 2000, the Penny Black was recreated using the original printing press by Royal Mail. This event is held at the Stamp Show in London. The British Library’s philatelic collection provides a Perkins-Bacon printing press. These revolutionary stamps are exciting and rarely found in stamp collections as well as other large collections such as commemorative stamps.
