Hybrid Hype and a Small Price Hike

Drive a car in the United States and ask to see the latest hybrid car models. Don’t be stupefied if eight out of ten tell you that they can’t save money – that they sell too quickly! There’s a reason behind the hype: consumers believe in one (or all) of three things, that they’ll get a better deal if gas prices hit $2.50 a gallon, that they don’t sacrifice performance and that they help the environment.

Let’s first consider how these cars are put together. First, we need to understand the concept of “hybrid”. A hybrid car can be defined as a vehicle that uses two or more sources of energy to propel itself. It seems simple enough. Hybrid engines are all around us in the form of diesel-electric, such as city buses, and nuclear-electric, such as those used in many US submarines. So, the idea and the technology have been around for a long time – now there’s another energy scare like the 1970s, so we’re starting to get resourceful and a little bit smarter. Hybrid power is on the rise (and in demand) simply because the two types of propulsion possibilities (gasoline/diesel and electric) standing alone have proven ineffective ways to get power and efficiency in one package. But, working together, there is promise.

A hybrid car, in modern terminology, usually refers to any car that has a combination of electric and gasoline (or diesel) motors. These cars use kinetic energy (called regenerative braking), absorbed by the rest when you stop, to recharge the battery which then drives the electric motor. All of this is combined into one neat schematic–the result is power for the transmission and propulsion power (that is, the movement of the wheels).

All hybrids contain a gasoline engine, an electric motor, a generator (usually in series hybrids), a fuel storage tank, a battery and a transmission.

There are actually two types of hybrid engines. The first is a parallel hybrid. This type of hybrid actually contains a gasoline and electric motor that can be used independently to propel the car forward. It is designed to have two resources that can be used for a single purpose. In many ways, they are still “connected”.

The second hybrid is often referred to as a series hybrid. In a series hybrid, the gas- or diesel-powered engine is not connected directly to the transmission, meaning it cannot propel the car on its own. It can actually be indirect, generator power, which one (controlled by a computer monitoring system) either feeds power to the battery or directly feeds power to the electric motor connected to the transmission.

As mentioned above, hybrid buyers are looking for the combination (and compromise) of power and energy that the car provides. Many gasoline-powered cars have a lot of horsepower. This is beneficial for the modern driving experience. No one wants to do a minimum of 45 mph on the interstate and stop to “refuel,” like an electric motorcycle. Plus, there’s no need to feel like you need to put a slow-moving reflective magnet in your luggage. However, many gasoline-powered cars are a “wasted” resource because of those 175 horses, you only need to use less than half of that power to drive each day. We don’t even have to get into the harmful environmental factors of pure gasoline engines. We are now beginning to see the results of our apathy on this matter.

Engines in hybrid cars are usually smaller (except in some newer V-6 models). While this reduces fuel consumption, it means that the extra “power” that drivers are looking for must come from somewhere else. It has an electric motor and a battery. In some models, sensors detect that the car needs extra energy to climb hills, for example. That’s when “Hybrid” half of the engine kicks in. It will do a dandy job of giving the engine that extra oomph or boost it needs, without using more gasoline.

Newer hybrid models do a lot of extra tricks to get your car more miles to the gallon. For example, when you stop at a traffic light, another sensor will trigger the gasoline engine to idle until it comes to a complete stop, while the car remains “running” only on electric power. Did I mention genius?

Since the idea behind hybrid powered cars is to reduce fuel consumption without loss of speed or power, many cars are designed to move through the streets with a completely aerodynamic shape; that means the hybrid will create less “drag,” simply because of the body structure. Many also use lighter building materials, reducing weight and pulling. Some models even have wheel covers and no mirrors (replaced with cameras and navigation equipment), which saves a lot of energy.

Hybrids are not seen as a fad or a social experiment. Consumers and car enthusiasts alike like what they see on the market. Every day seems to be better designed, lighter; More fuel efficient and powerful hybrids are in. The recently released model even beats its gas-powered counterpart. One has a 255 hp engine with other capabilities such as being able to turn off half the cylinder (without warning) when moving to save fuel and energy.

Hybrid-engineered cars cost less. Usually the price difference is around 3,000 dollars. And, it may take a few years (depending on gas prices) to get your fuel economy right. However, it is still better for the environment, and that lingers (and makes it worthwhile) in some consumers’ minds.

And, if you can still hold on to the signature V-8, you might remember that newer hybrid models got petal-to-the-metal peelers back in the day. The hybrid model came close to (even beat!) the gas-powered car in the 0 to 60 mph road test.

So, if you decide that a new car might be a viable option in the future, don’t expect to see many hybrids on dealer lots. You may need to do some driving around the country to find options. Do some preliminary searches on the Internet and find out what model works best for you and your lifestyle. Remember all that has been mentioned and perhaps – in the future – you will have no other choice but a hybrid, which now seems to be the best option.
