How Much Storage Do You Need in Your Kitchen?
It’s time to renovate your kitchen and if you’re like most people, you want your new kitchen to look good but you also want it to function properly.
You may already be thinking about what kind of cabinets, countertops, flooring, lighting and fixtures you want, but this is just a starting point. To have a well-designed kitchen that will meet the needs of your home, your kitchen must function properly and have enough storage.
My favorite place to start when designing a kitchen is with storage! It sounds boring at first, but believe me, a designer who cares about the proper placement of kitchen necessities is worth its weight in gold.
So how do you determine the right amount of storage for your space. Let’s start with some basics.
There are three kitchen sizes defined by the National Kitchen and Bath Association. They are small, medium and large.
A small kitchen is less than 150 square feet. Medium kitchens start at 151 square feet and go up to 350 square feet. While a large kitchen is defined as a space larger than 350 square feet.
The first step to designing a kitchen with proper storage is to determine the size of the kitchen you have. Each kitchen size has its own guidelines established by the NKBA to ensure the appropriate amount of storage.
Here’s how it works. The designer will take the entire kitchen design and break it down in front of the cabinet. Each cabinet can be calculated in the following way.
Cabinet width in inches x number of shelves and drawers x cabinet width = shelves and drawer fronts.
A small kitchen needs 1,400 “shelf/drawer front. A medium kitchen clocks in at 1,700″ while a large kitchen needs 2,000”.
If you know how many fronts you need, you can determine how many cabinets you need in your design to give you the storage space you need to make it work.
When determining what cabinets to use not all cabinets are created equal. There are cabinets for pots, pans, utensils, cookie sheets, dry goods, trash cans, utensils, lids, chemicals and food. If it’s in the kitchen, you can be sure there are cabinets or cabinet accessories specially designed for the home.
Once you’ve determined how many cabinets best fit the square footage you have to work with, you need to look at each cabinet and what it will contain. This is a very important step in the design process that is often overlooked. Many professional remodeling companies will put in the base cabinets to fit the space without diving deeper into what will be stored in each cabinet. A cookie sheet holder cabinet often called a tray divider cabinet will be useless if it is far from the stove, while a pull-out waste will lose its effectiveness if it is not in the sink.
Then there are specific guidelines related to storage in close proximity to the sink. The sink is one of (if not the most) important piece of equipment and work zone in the kitchen. NKBA guidelines state that small kitchens should have 400″ of storage within 72″ of the main cleaning/prep sink. A medium kitchen should be 480″ and a large kitchen 560″.
Below the kitchen line can not only be designed for appearance but also must be designed for function.
A proper kitchen should have storage for every item that is used and will work well if the NKBA guidelines are considered.
